I'm debating selling off all my warhammer CRAP

I've got a whole new garage to build up

BustrKc 03-Oct-18 09:55 AM
That's what im sorta worried about with the warhammer shit, is never playing
Guards 03-Oct-18 10:47 AM
We had such a good Warhammer scene here before age of sigmar
And it was literally murdered
I guess by many accounts aos is a fine game
I just haven't played it
Bear in the Woods 03-Oct-18 01:16 PM

hah, that's actually pretty awesome
like a giant version of the old football handhelds
I love the intellivision controller display insert
but man, keeping track of parts like that sure has made playing some things a pain in the ass
vector graphics are nuts
BustrKc 03-Oct-18 02:44 PM
Yea, sellem
Vectrex are pretty expensive last i checked
Even like a parts as/is listing might get you something, but only like local craigslist or someshit
Shipping would be not worth it
I have a lynx that has a broken up button and idk why i kept it

I guess camera stuff is as much creative as it is tech
this niggy does some fucking great reviews
this is the lens I ended up buying for sort of a general purpose compact thing
the idea of having something less intrusive and more simple like this on the camera makes me more excited for taking pictures even without travelling
I think having such a stubby lens may even be mildly beneficial to tripod-less lowlight images, since it keeps the center of gravity closer to the body, should have a small effect on hand stability and shit
Prude 11-Oct-18 02:48 AM

BustrKc 11-Oct-18 06:13 PM
I got an Olympus em-10 that works well enough
Lenses are real cheap for micro 4/3rds
Prude 11-Oct-18 06:14 PM
if I got into photography enough to justify buying another body down the line, I think I'd go mirrorless
there's very little downsides at this point in the tech
and it suits me more to have something small and light
BustrKc 11-Oct-18 06:14 PM
They keep making nicer and nicer models
Prude 11-Oct-18 06:14 PM
granted the t5 isn't THAT heavy or big, at least
BustrKc 11-Oct-18 06:17 PM
My faggot friend was all "I need full frame, bleggh" but getting good with composition with what you've got is way better
Prude 11-Oct-18 06:18 PM
yeah I think for most people, the only way full frame makes a difference is having to calculate full frame equivilent focal lengths
so like on my crop, this 24mm will end up being similar to a 38mm on a full frame
which seems like a great thing for a general purpose prime lens, since that's pretty close (maybe a tad bit bigger, which I'd rather have than smaller for street photography and shit) to what the eye can focus on (edited)
there may be other benefits to full frame photography but I haven't seen people worry about them much
I think with mirrorless, the philosophy of "the best camera is the one you have with you" works
more likely to carry one of those around more often than some big nig
BustrKc 11-Oct-18 06:45 PM
Yeah, m4/3 is like half the equivalent
Bear in the Woods 11-Oct-18 07:43 PM

and then this tutorial
cause while it's not perfect, it seems like it's about 75% of the way there
and I wanna try it if I can get any images that would work for the style
mostly the basis seems to revolve around split toning and sort of blowing out the blacks (and not in the usual way i'd advocate for)
plus maybe a little desaturation

protip: insulated (therefor a bit padded) offbrand lunchboxes are probably both the cheapest and the least "steal me" way to store a small camera setup within another bag, for when you don't want a bulkier dedicated camera bag (because in my use case here, I intend to be actively using it if it's outside of my primary bag) or one of those sort of stiff and also bulky camera padding inserts
Shop Covax at the Amazon Storage & Organization store. Free Shipping on eligible items. Everyday low prices, save up to 50%.
because it'd be sitting inside my bigger backpack and I just want a little extra padding and concealment (edited)
and it also only weighs 3 ounces while having dimensions that should be able to fit my t5, 24mm pancake, extra batter and charging cord
for instance, this MIGHT be able to fit the body w/ the pancake on it, but just those things, and weighs the same amount while having thinner padding: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016RD7O16/ref=psdc_3345931_t1_B0087N0GH4
and it's also much more expensive, it seems like cases of that style which aren't molded to fit big ass long lenses start at about $20
therefor, the generic lunchbox is quite a steal!!!!
5 x 4 x 3 is basically the size of the body, I think the pancake at most adds half an inch to the last measurement and given the slack a 8.5 x 6 x 3 lunchbox would have (minus perhaps 6mm in all dimensions due to padding), it seems snug but not crushing
while as I stated, I think I could fit the few accessories I'd intend to bring in as well
I'll start mapping out how I'd pack shit for a trip like this after I suppose the primary backpack I intend to use is in my possession since UPS DROPPED THE FUCKIN BALL ree
I also like that this shitty little lunchbox still has a handle, so I could probably hang it from an internal loop in the backpack so it's not on the same "level" as the clothing packing cubes, keeping a thinner profile
Prude 17-Oct-18 12:11 AM
It is here!!!
They sure ship lenses with a lot of protection
Like more than you'd need even if you were throwing the hilariously large outer box around
Good on them, I guess
Just funny having so much around perhaps the smallest lens I've seen
man
the AF is super fast and quiet compared to the kit lens
sort of cute, even
the minimum focus range is also a lot closer than the kit lens, so some semi-macro shots are easier to do
Prude 17-Oct-18 05:27 AM
it bothers me that the autofocus section of this manual is written to cater to people who use live view over the viewfinder all the time
Prude 17-Oct-18 06:17 AM
in case anyone needed some canon shit, I've got this code for 15% off that is valid till like mid-november and should work on certain products (don't know which! It just mentioned certain eos cams and lenses and so on - it would let me use it on the same lens I bought, at least): C163301RR (edited)
I don't think it's bound to my account
wish I had known registering products gave one a discount code, lol - could've saved ~15 more bux on this refurb if I had registered my body (which is like 2 years old) immediately before (edited)

Taylor Swift 10-Nov-18 04:43 PM

New Dawn 10-Nov-18 04:44 PM
the reason i mentioned specifically tobacco companies is because those fellas had a shitload of money to spend
and they are the reason why F1 even had so many manufacturers all the way until they got banned
because they were giving money hand over fist so some shed in the UK could produce a backmarker with a 555 livery
Riso 10-Nov-18 04:46 PM
to be fair
the budgets also were ridiculously small
so they could make a big splash with little effort
New Dawn 10-Nov-18 04:46 PM
i'm talking 90's F1
Riso 10-Nov-18 04:46 PM
still ridiculously small compared to today
New Dawn 10-Nov-18 04:46 PM
the budgets def weren't small
a legit small budget team was only really possible in the 1970's, when you could just buy a march chassis, put a DFV in and be competetive out of the box
Riso 10-Nov-18 04:48 PM
1990 first time the budgets broke 100 million
we're at 400 now
that's twice as high as inflation would demand
New Dawn 10-Nov-18 04:49 PM
then again, logistics of it these days are completely silly and all the development's gone to aero
New Dawn 10-Nov-18 04:49 PM
and because F1 wanted to be "road car relevant", the hybrid units are also really expensive
New Dawn 10-Nov-18 04:50 PM
i'm not surprised 2007 was when budgets peaked
but i can see where all the lower mid-field has packed into
Riso 10-Nov-18 04:50 PM
2014 isnt all that far behind
New Dawn 10-Nov-18 04:51 PM
then again, new power units and merc got lucky that their rivals went down the wrong path
also, you can def see where the tobacco money went away

if I had more savings I'd probably spring for the panasonic gx85 w/ both kit lenses i'm seeing around the web for under $500 right now
as much as I've barely really used my canon in practice, I think for the type of shit I like the concept of the most (handheld street/travel photography), mirrorless micro 4/3 makes more sense for me (edited)
small form factor + pancake lenses
could sell the kit lens, at least the longer focal length one
and the panasonic has good in body image stabilization that will mesh with lens-based stabilization and such, makes slow shutter speeds w/o tripod more workable (edited)
m43 lenses also seem cheaper and more varied than any other system
if I do work during this break and develop a surplus of funds, I may do it and sell off my current system since it'd mostly cover it anyhow
though I still have a pretty compact kit without going mirrorless and realistically I will manage without the fancier features, would be nice to get more experience making sure I know what I want out of cameras and waitin a few more years of USB-C to become standard on all models (these companies seem slow on that front)
BustrKc 04-Dec-18 04:32 PM
M4/3 is pretty awesome. One of the best lenses can be had for like $170
Olympus 45mm 1.8
And the gx 85 shoots 4k video i think as well
Prude 05-Dec-18 12:49 AM
lol looking through Masashi Wakui's gear setups across his images on flickr is interesting
really affirms the point that having the most sophisticated equipment doesn't make up for good composition and knowledge of how to shoot
dude uses a bunch of unconventional stuff - Pentax DSLRs, the Ricoh GR, even a 1" sensor Sony point and shoot
and the results are consistent enough that I can't tell a difference
I guess in his case, it's also a testament to the power of editing
Prude 05-Dec-18 01:48 AM
one of the most annoying things I've seen in online discussions re: photography is the obsession with shooting wide open and the resulting bokeh
I frankly don't like the aesthetic in most contexts
I think my favorite images almost always involve a whole scene lending context beyond just the intended subject
so when you look at people talking about technique and recommendations, it's annoying that so much of the discourse is weighted in favoring that style
I think it's also maybe informed by the majority of professionals probably ultimately doing portraits - thus why they seem way more fond of 50~mm equivilent focal lengths (and sometimes higher, depending on how they capture subjects) - which seems like the main situation in which everpresent bokeh is being praised
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:26 AM
Yeah, that Olympus lens is one of the bokeh lenses that people only shoot wide open with
Its got a lot of versatility and is really sharp, but it's very much a portrait lens
45mm in m4/3 is ~90mm in 35
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:28 AM
Yeah
I think something I like about the GX85 is that the shorter focal range kit lens is like 12-32 which in FF equivilent is a very useful range, and the lens is considered to be quite good for a kit lens
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:29 AM
Yeah, the kit lens I got is trash
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:29 AM
plus it's rather small, so I'd not wanna immediately discard it for a prime pancake
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:30 AM
I have a lumix 14mm pancake lens and its so small
I can cary the whole setup in a coat pocket (edited)
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:30 AM
Still not sure I'll make the jump, but I'll probably keep researching regardless. If they had quality entry level m43 models out now with USB-C charging it'd be that much easier of a sell, but for now I did tell myself I'd not be upgrading electronics until I could standardize all my cords and shit.
Unfortunately the m43 market seems like it's not seen many new bodies in the last few years
at least in the range of prices I'm looking at, but the bodies being 2015-2016 models is probably why they're so cheap now
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:31 AM
Yeah, the omd series is nice and cheap but old
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:32 AM
I think the entire industry is sort of slow on the uptake for convenience features, I think the EOS R is the first camera I've seen that for sure has USB-C as an option
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:32 AM
I got my em10 body for like $220ish
Yeah, I really wanna get some eos
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:33 AM
but not the form factor or pricepoint or mount I'd be looking into
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:33 AM
Its like an awkward middle of the road size
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:33 AM
my current is a canon eos t5 which I've 100% not come close to outgrowing yet, and of course canon is a solid system
but the past few months of toying with it more and doing research has me feeling more in tune with what I'd like to do, thus why I think m43 would probably be right for me
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:35 AM
They do suffer in options though
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:36 AM
getting that 24mm f/2.8 pancake was educational, because I realized I didn't miss the zoom at all and I really enjoy the lower profile
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:36 AM
Yeah, primes are where its at imo
Better sharpness and makes you more consistent
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:37 AM
Yeah, I feel like there's more soul in it having to work around "restrictions" like that too
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:37 AM
Idk if you do street stuff but knowing how far to be is nice
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:37 AM
Most things I'd want a picture of, I can zoom in on with my legs
Street photography is what I like most if I was to identify any particular genre
some landscapes too
I think individuals on their own are sort of boring subjects and maybe that's why I'm annoyed at the portrait-centric advice you find most places (edited)
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:39 AM
Yeah, most people are taking photos for other people
I got my friend into it and he had more money to spend and now gets gross thots to pose for him and really went down the least desirable path with it imo
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:40 AM
lmao
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:41 AM
I really cant hate it enough
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:41 AM
I mean I won't deny my initial interest in photography in like 2015 or whenever I actually purchased this camera was somewhat shallow - it's a "sexy" hobby (in theory) and it was something that gives me a feasible excuse to go out even if alone
But then for several years I barely did any of that anyways, haha
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:42 AM
I mean this dude is just shooting softcore porn
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:43 AM
Beyond portraits, I guess arranged studio-type shooting in general kind of sounds boring (even if that's probably how you make money - but I know this isn't something I'm doing for money), even if your subjects are gross nude thots (edited)
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:43 AM
Yeah
Im sure there's plenty you can do with it but I'll let other people do that
I'm more into the video side of things really
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:45 AM
I think the emergent conditions of being in the right place in the right time is what I'm excited by, or like framing something that exists out there without my direction so to represent it a particular way
I haven't been a big video guy but the video capabilities of the gx85 are something else that seems theoretically nice to have
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:46 AM
Yeah, similar for me, I'm more finding and documenting ideas for video settings with photography
I was going to get a gx85 like a year ago and held off because I have the Olympus and don't have any complaints yet
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:47 AM
Yeah the comparisons all make them sound like pretty big sidegrades to each other
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:47 AM
I was looking into the blackmagic cine stuff instead more recently
But thats very different
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:48 AM
Olympus seems a bit more popular but I'm not sure I like the form factor w/ the faux mirror dome looking bit when compared to the rangefinder style
and the consensus seems to be the olympus EVF is definitely the better of the two (edited)
apparently the gx85 viewfinder kinda sucks which is one thing I'm wary about, would probably have to go try one out in a store to commit as such
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:49 AM
Yeah, thats the best way if you have one of those around
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:49 AM
I know the local best buy has them, or so their website claims
so maybe one will be on display
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:50 AM

Prude 05-Dec-18 04:50 AM

Prude 05-Dec-18 04:50 AM

BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:50 AM
The blackmagic stuff is cool
I have the first one
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:50 AM
ah
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:50 AM
Mach 1 or w/e
The later ones way better i guess lol
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:51 AM
yeah, I guess I've mostly looked at the mk. 2 and 3 since they're pretty comparable to the gx
the mk. 2 is about the same price, and the 3 is maybe another $100 which isn't a huge leap if it means some of the image processing or w/e is better and it can do better video and so on
but I doubt the first gen is really that much worse anyhow, I think all this iterative shit is super marginal and won't replace skill
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:53 AM
Thats the pocket cinema camera from that blackmagic company
It takes decent pictures I guess, but way more for video
But also is m4/3
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:54 AM
I actually like the design language of the body itself
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:54 AM
And you can build up this shit
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:54 AM
their UI looks really modern in these images too
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:56 AM
Yeah, but if you're into photography more so it's not worth it
They make an even smaller one too that's essentially just the sensor
And you build it up with the rails and shit
Prude 05-Dec-18 04:56 AM
Yeah I don't think I fit the use case, but I'm surprised that it's fairly reasonably priced - feels like a lot of these lesser-known niche products tend to be higher on the price scale
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 04:57 AM
Yeah, I've been eyeing them for a while
Theres a pretty cringey youtuber that does alot of camera reviews that are pretty helpful, named kai wong

BustrKc 05-Dec-18 05:06 AM
And i think the m2 does 4k as well
Prude 05-Dec-18 05:08 AM
I will say, as much as I don't love the faux-prism shape on a lot of these brands, I guess they do at least partially house the EVF and I will say they do look cool, size considerations aside
and the olympus m43 line is still a good bit smaller than even my small cannon mirrored dslr
the silver models w/ olympus look real sharp, and I think their dials are most robust than panasonic as well
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 05:10 AM
Yeah, I do feel like a bigger hipster fag with the faux film look
Prude 05-Dec-18 05:12 AM
I think for the purpose of street photography, it looks less suspect and imposing than a big DSLR anyhow
which I think is somewhat important to not feeling like a dickhead taking pictures in a crowded space
I guess a mark against olympus is people do say their menus are a bit less intuitive than panasonic's, the YT guy just brought that up and reminded me
Prude 05-Dec-18 05:23 AM
The other option beyond debating between Olympus and Panasonic would be sucking it up and sticking with APS-C mirrorless via Sony or Fuji
since the a6000 is so praised and affordable these days, as well, that'd be a consideration - however, the lenses for those systems are definitely more expensive and less plentiful
but the flipside is I don't think I'm someone who really needs more than a single lens I really like
Though I also hear the sony menus are the worst, even if that's probably not really a dealbreaker for most people
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 05:26 AM
Yeah, Olympus menus are pretty fucked
Prude 05-Dec-18 05:26 AM
Also the a6000 lacks IBIS which would suck since I'm not much for tripods, whereas the IBIS on both m43 options these days seems really good
BustrKc 05-Dec-18 05:27 AM
Theres also a warm tone thing on some of them that you have to turn off
Yeah, i know the em5 has like crazy ibis
I think older Panasonics were in the lens or someshit
Prude 05-Dec-18 05:28 AM
semi-recent models including the gx85 have IBIS that will also pair with panasonic lens IS apparently
but apparently it's not really any better than the olympus IBIS on its own
as negligible as the difference is anyhow, olympus still probably affords more options then since you could get the good IBIS on a lens with no IS itself

It was irresponsible but I went for the GX85 because I think after selling the unnecessary extra kit lens and my old kit, I may actually come out ahead neg
and I'm tired of being distracted by mirrorless envy!!!!!
I think how much my larger DSLR sticks out has been an obstacle to shooting how I'd like to
It's through amazon so if I hate the EVF that much, I'll return, but that's the only real downside I see in that body and a lot of people have said it's tolerable if its your first EVF
Prude 06-Dec-18 12:19 AM
YI M1 Mirrorless Digital Camera produces stunning photos with the latest Sony 20MP image sensor, making it one of the best cameras for photography.
just heard of this brand as recently entering the m43 market, interesting
not my use case but if you were cool w/ 100% shooting w/o EVF this things specs seem pretty wild for the price

Never heard of this program before, but in terms of doing lightroom type work on rails I think the design and results are sort of impressive
although I do question some of her individual editing choices, especially in the images involving people (I think her take ended up at times a bit too saturated or something, especially bad in the last image where she applies the previous image's settings to it)
and a quick google tells me it doesn't quite have a very robust asset management element yet, but maybe that changed in the last few months since that anwer
still, something to keep an eye on I guess
still would prefer for affinity to release a standalone raw editing program, but I guess in the meantime I'll just try to learn darktable because I do respect FOSS options

Man, I cant wait to go to China for shit like that
Prude 07-Dec-18 02:11 AM
whew
this camera is pretty wild
the EVF doesn't seem bad to me - yeah it's not going to fully show the clarity of the final image, but it will show the focus, framing, and general exposure levels (which an OVF won't do, ofc) just fine which is all I need
not getting the weird rainbow striping some people complained about which apparently depends on the user's individual eyes
so that's the main "downside" taken care of
the amount of features compared to the t5 is insane
will take a long time to learn everything, but I feel justified now because it's all working great
I think the biggest "complaint" actually would be bizarre asymmetric strap mounts wherein the right one is sort of placed such that you need to have it between your fingers in a strange way, but I think it'd be easy to get used to that
While I was originally planning on selling the 45-150mm kit lens, I may not because while my rationale was originally that I would rarely ever shoot in those focal lengths, it's also a cheap way to maintain access to said focal lengths should the situation arise
so maybe there's utility in keeping it as the one really long range zoom option within whatever m43 collection I may establish as times go on
cause any standalone lens with those lengths will probably cost me a lot more than what I'd make off selling the kit lens
another upside I suppose is since it's m43, the 45-150 is quite the zoom option w/ the 2x crop factor
BustrKc 07-Dec-18 03:13 AM
Yeah, I would agree with keeping that lens
Never know when you gotta spy on some neighbors
Prude 07-Dec-18 03:15 AM
the 12-32 works like a dream
I like primes but I don't think there will be any urgency to pick one up (which is a good thing for now, about tapped out for splurging)
super quiet continuous autofocus in video mode, makes me feel more willing to shoot video
BustrKc 07-Dec-18 03:16 AM
I'd highly recommend the olympus 45mm 1.8 if you can get it under $200
For primes anyhow
Prude 07-Dec-18 03:17 AM
the dual stabilization shit is nice too, def helps with video/long exposures
those kinds of features probably more than make up for any loss of "low light capabilities" when going from the older APS-C sensor
BustrKc 07-Dec-18 03:18 AM
Yeah, I don't have that luxury with my setup, but i use a tripod mostly
Prude 07-Dec-18 03:18 AM
because my t5 didn't have IBIS, nor did the tiny pancake I got for it
BustrKc 07-Dec-18 03:19 AM
Unless you got full frame you aren't really geared up for night photography anyhow
Prude 07-Dec-18 03:20 AM
From what I've seen, these don't have many issues in the urban night scenes I'd prefer
I'd rather not have to ship everything, so I may try and sell my t5 locally if possible, may be able to swing it
the body, kit lens, OEM battery/charger/cord + a third party spare battery, a 32 gig SD card, threw in one of my many individually wrapped microfiber cloth packs, and a camera bag I never really used for anything but at-home storage
Figure someone looking to get into photography cheap may be interested in something like that
BustrKc 07-Dec-18 03:27 AM
Good luck, I tried selling my other Olympus recently and had so many ridiculous offers for it
Prude 07-Dec-18 03:27 AM
and then the 24mm pancake I could sell individually probably for barely less than I got it for
Yeah, I do hear selling locally (like through craigslist or FB) you get a lot of lowballing retards (edited)

BustrKc 07-Dec-18 03:30 AM
Yeah, one of the cheap caselogic bags work well to house those types of things for shipping
Prude 07-Dec-18 03:30 AM
I'd probably just put it all back in there and then in a larger box with those plastic bubble things to limite movement like amazon did for this new one
If I could find a larger flat rate box, I could probably ship it all inside of the camera bag
since the camera bag is like a sturdy canvas messenger with one of those heavily padded inserts inside
may be an option
I have a lot of shit to sell

I guess buying/selling things is a universal act and the process has you dealing with a lot of the dregs of society you'd otherwise never really run into
It's like going to walmart here in my otherwise affluent town - nowhere in like 20 square miles do you see the kinds of "walmart people" who still magically seem to populate the aisles there

Prude 09-Dec-18 07:42 AM
Man after seeing a few more of that Kai dude's videos, I think the biggest annoyance is how often has no strap of any kind for securing the camera
big ass full frame with expensive glass, carrying it fucking under his arm at times with nothing to keep it from slipping from that super precarious grip (edited)
Been seeing some good tips for taking images of random people who might be aware of you on the street
like aiming your camera high like you're getting a building or the sky, then bringing it back down at your actual intended subject while pretending to review the image
or not immediately putting it down after you get the image you want, so it looks like your intention was something beyond your subject
and I guess a really nice feature of things like the gx85 is that the screen swivel would allow one to be able to take candids with it hanging from their neck basically, in a pinch
It's unfortunate that people even care so much about it when there's all kinds of cameras that they don't associate with photography pointed at them all day every day, and I've taken plenty of creep shots of weird people while acting discrete w/ my cell phone, but I guess we live in a time with a bunch of paranoid retards who also have a poor grasp on their complete lack of legal privacy in the public space
I think a rangefinder form factor with a small lens should help as well, though

I haven't used one, but the tendency for the high end Leica-branded Panasonic lenses to sometimes have manual aperture rings is dumb and seems like something that would make me not want to bother with spending 500+ on a single prime (as it the case for the 15mm f1.7)
which I suppose is a good thing, any reason to not chance the gear is probably better tbqh
but it's a baffling design decision to me
would rather, if possible, have the lens engineered to be smaller, or if not, just make the manual focus ring bigger and more ergonomic instead
BustrKc 15-Dec-18 02:22 PM
I do like the ones that have the shifty style rings
The 12mm Olympus i think has it
Like a fast shift from auto to manual ring
Prude 15-Dec-18 02:24 PM
you mean the ones where you pull the ring back to engage manual focus?
BustrKc 15-Dec-18 02:24 PM
Yeah
Prude 15-Dec-18 02:24 PM
the 17mm that a lot of people tout as one of the better 35mm equivilents has that, it seems like a nice feature
BustrKc 15-Dec-18 02:25 PM
Yeah, thats the one
Prude 15-Dec-18 02:25 PM
just don't see much use in a dedicated manual aperture
BustrKc 15-Dec-18 02:25 PM
Film i guess
I wanted a rokinon cine that had that in a declicked ring but thats like the only application i can understand
I mean, video
Prude 15-Dec-18 02:26 PM
yeah that's the thing, some of the ones I've seen are clicky too so then it shits up video anyhow
BustrKc 15-Dec-18 02:26 PM
Yeah, that's idiotic
Or for the fake leica experience
Prude 15-Dec-18 02:27 PM
or they'll be simultaneously clicky, so bad for video, but also a bit easy to turn with pressure applied anyow, so manual focusing for stills also can get messy
I forgot which model I read that about, but one lens I was watching a review to had both those downsides, lol
Chasing the old school leica aesthetic is some retard shit in general
I can appreciate that they still produce good glass or w/e, but nostalgia wanking is dumb

the 20mm 1.7 also seems like an attractive cheap halfway between the 14 and the 25, but I'd have to fuck around with that length on my zoom to know if 40mm equiv would work for me
typically I've been thinking of it as 35mm equiv being about the high end for the kinds of scenes I like
Not that I really need to buy anything anytime soon, the 12-32 pancake zoom kit lens is really handy and small anyways and really doesn't have any shortcomings
the biggest thing would probably be that variable aperture is annoying if you're jumping between focal lengths

Probably the most popular lens format is with the Micro 4/3 system. There are so many great lenses for these cameras that the only way to not make my brain explode was to create an organized list of all the MFT M43 lenses I've been able to find with their 35mm equivalent ...
handy

Honestly not all of the pictures are even particularly interesting, but his processing and atmosphere are always great
to a point I may be guilty of the same stuff as a lot of the HDR worshippers, but I do think atmosphere is the operative word there
Any single image he does may have kind of a non-significant subject, but because he shoots just cityscape shit in the same city, it does work into an ongoing series of images

WHUHHH DON'T USE VAGUELY TECHNICAL LANGUAGE
Evaluating lenses in terms of FF equiv is standard language and useful to know about if you're say discussing m43, aps-c, and medium format in the same general space (let alone actual FF)
And when people talk about 50 being a great neutral focal length
Someone new may assume that's true without awareness of crop factors and then wonder why their nifty fifty is tight as fuck
Etc.
But classic goon bullshit, just like you see a lot in games
People who just start reeing when the language gets more technical than they arbitrarily deem acceptable

Basic Amateurish Processing - Trying to gauge general camera/lens performance in "worst case scenario" conditions.
renders a bit worse embedded vs. on site (edited)
but anyhow, I consider that image's conditions pretty nightmarish given what I'm using; it was rather dark tonight, quite foggy, all the relevant light sources are dim and reddish streetlights (edited)
3200 ISO on mostly shadows (my incredibly basic knowledge of Darktable NR won't do me any favors), f/5.6 is as wide as that lens will go when zoomed in like that, thus necessitating a very long exposure time (for handheld) which it actually handles fairly gracefully thanks to the system's IS I suppose (edited)
this is exactly the kind of situation where I would choose one of the fast primes over the (quite good) 12-32mm
but I think if you don't zoom in, it holds up alright
I would def downsample if I was serious about images in these conditions
Prude 21-Dec-18 03:08 AM
Another practice shot/edit.
Here's the front of the church
Prude 21-Dec-18 03:57 AM
Ah, I see - images look a bit worse when embedded (especially noteworthy in the artifacting around the sign in the first one) because while Flickr will maintain original format and quality (PNG in this case) for the full version, any preview on the site or elsewhere is a jpg with their own sharpening applied
Prude 21-Dec-18 04:05 AM
I do like Darktable - it doesn't seem any more confusing than Lightroom was on the few occasions I used it before
I'll need to put some time into figuring out how to nail down a good workflow, but for just bumbling around it doesn't take long to get images developed in the necessary ways
I recall reading there's some way to make f.lux automatically pause when certain programs are open, will have to figure that out for darktable
since I will 100% forget that f.lux is running for the first 5 minutes of every attempt to edit images

Hi, I'm Rob. This is the world, the way I see it.
cool work
Prude 31-Dec-18 04:55 AM
honestly if someone didn't want to spend a lot of money up front and liked the idea of the m43 ecosystem
This actually looks like it would be a decent deal
I don't know how good their glass is (probably not amazing), but still: a standard m43 kit zoom FL range, a fast portrait prime, and what seems like a body that exceeds exprctations for the price is quite good
Like fucking pennies by camera standards
Apparently the most obvious shortcoming is poor AF, but manual zooming in challenging focusing conditions is not a big ask; seems like the raws come out quite alright in terms of actual IQ (edited)
From this, you would have an obvious opening to pick up a wide prime and/or telephoto zoom from the existing m43 family and you would have a fairly complete kit for all purposes
And then upgrading the body at some point via a used last gen model or whatever would be a fairly cheap step up
The body is probably frankly barely worse than the super entry level evf-less type models oly and panny have, similar styling and features too
Seems like the kind of situation where if it was any cheaper, it'd obviously be one of those garbage toy cameras, but it's right at the price and performance threshold where it fills a similar niche as like midrange chinese phones (so ultra-budget by US standards) where for a few hundred dollars, you actually get something that works as well as something twice as expensive in "name brand" equivalents
That chinatech magic where they hit the peak of the value curve, where performance is just above worthwhile and diminishing returns on the performance:price rario aren't harsh yet
as an aside, I 100% hope it becomes a trend where emerging chinese tech producers go to m43 for their "step up from phone cams" ILCs
Because sooner or later one will get ambitious and produce some glass (with AF, I hope) worth a shit on the cheap

Because I have pretty much never yet needes to do photoshop-tier touch up, but I do need to make minor broad adjustments to most RAWS and I like the organization and workflow of stuff like Lightroom and Darktable
Which btw, I'd say Darktable is good if you don't feel like pirating or paying for a RAW processing program

apparently this + a like $1 thread converter (from 43mm to 46mm) can be used to make the pana 14mm into functionally a ~10mm on the cheap (edited)
kind of a novel idea
apparently it doesn't hit IQ too bad
cheaper than buying literally any ultrawide on m43 I think, aside from the 9mm lens cap (but that won't be rectilinear)
just hard to justify buying the 14mm, as cheap as it is, because of how much I've read that it basically isn't really any sharper than the 12-32 and it's only marginally faster (so dual IS probably makes up the difference) (edited)
not that I'm really looking to shell out anytime soon anyhow
Prude 03-Jan-19 01:59 PM
On the E-M1X launch day around Jan 20 Olympus will also announce the development of new MFT lenses. The only "production ready" lens will be the 150-400mm f/4.0
come on cheap small semi-wide primes 😩
basically another iteration upon the 17mm 1.8 is all I want; make it sharper or smaller (either would be a fair compromise I guess) for the same cost or less as the current and it'd be a winner
not that i'd complain if the current fell in my lap
but I figure by the time they got any new iteration out, it'd be around the time I actually had money to decide upon something like that

it's too bad that pana doesn't really have any official NA refurb outlet like olympus does, oly has some real good deals on bodies (the lens ones are okay, probably a wash with buying used in terms of savings vs. risk assessment)
Every part of the E-M10 Mark III has been designed with you in mind. It starts with a carefully crafted metal and leather grained body that cleverly hides the built-in flash.
this is nearly as good of a deal as what I got on the gx85
I'd say the gx85 and e-m10 mkIII basically are within feature parity of one another, but olympus mid-entry level bodies retain the retro dslr styling while panas are rangefinder styled; mostly a series of compromises in terms of ergonomics and dimensions and such (edited)
but anyways, would highly recommend deals like that if anyone ever did want to get into the m43 ecosystem
Riso 08-Jan-19 01:11 PM
but prude, why do I need that thing when I have a perfectly good top end smartphone with me all the time that makes pictures that are just as good??

also that's not a hasselblad, gay
Prude 08-Jan-19 01:13 PM
lack of full manual controls, lack of interchangeable lens options, phone sensors are shit (as physics dictate) no matter how well computational advances can attempt to make up for it, etc!!!!
but yes, you're right
that's why I chose to go into a mirrorless system that was small enough to carry around oftentimes
Riso 08-Jan-19 01:13 PM
anyway you can make phantastic pictures with any camera
if you have an eye for it
Prude 08-Jan-19 01:13 PM
because there was 0 fucking chance i'd ever just happen to bring the ol canon dslr out on a walk with no intentions in mind
sure
knowing the basics of composition and exposure will always be the biggest thing
one thing I'd never be able to go without now that i've used it is good IBIS (or dual IS in pana's case where it works in conjunction with lens OIS)
even my pixel has fairly good digital stabilization for video and such, but it's not the same
Riso 08-Jan-19 01:16 PM
sony has done something clever in their phones by putting ram between the sensor so it can buffer for more precision
Prude 08-Jan-19 01:17 PM
digital stabilization cannot enable slower shutter speeds, and for phones which tend to have a fixed aperture that means you often have to compromise with iso, which is why phone sensors often go straight to shit in even like slightly dim settings (aside from small sensors necessarily having worse noise performance anyhow)
HOWEVER I was playing around with a manual control app on my phone earlier
and I will say, while auto works good enough, it is real fucking ISO happy like they're building shit for people with Parkinson's (edited)
even without IBIS, I could handhold a phone shot steady for longer than auto would've assigned
Riso 08-Jan-19 01:20 PM
that was too much info already thanks
Prude 08-Jan-19 01:20 PM
Honestly aside from the phone thing, Sony as whole is probably going to continue to crush it in the camera industry
Canon and Nikon can only get by on brand recognition and normies thinking they're the only pro options for so long
Riso 08-Jan-19 01:22 PM
I really dont want to talk about nikon with only one memory slot and expensive non-standard xsd cards
Prude 08-Jan-19 01:22 PM
Sony isn't perfect but they seem much more aggressive in implementing new tech and pricing their releases to be fairly accessible - they also don't live or die by the performance of their camera division

Riso 13-Jan-19 01:13 PM
magic hour is what, most light?
Prude 13-Jan-19 01:24 PM
flattering light
basically sunrise/sunset create good softer natural light from a lower angle compared to harsh midday light

I suppose there's the whole m43 in very low light issue, but between ETTR and aggressive noise reduction in darktable, it's not nearly as bad as people make it sound
FWIW I think those shots are nice and not noticably noisy at all - granted I'm viewing on a phone screen currently, but so is every normie ever
BustrKc 14-Jan-19 09:18 AM
True, I should really just make it out during the day to take photos. I'll look into darktable
I usually just fuck around on ps till it looks not terrible and call it a day
Prude 14-Jan-19 09:18 AM
I mean any raw processing program will probably have acceptable noise reduction
LR would be fine too, or capture one, luminar, rawtherapee, whatever else - the main thing is just that you can push the NR much further than the camera could when shooting jpeg
I think PS does have the adobe camera raw plugin as well?
which is basically like LR embedded in it
BustrKc 14-Jan-19 09:21 AM
Olympus also does this annoying thing by having their own raw file type
Prude 14-Jan-19 09:22 AM
Anyways I've just really been loving Darktable's overall experience - there's a lot of tools (and many that do basically the same thing) and it doesn't hold your hand, but the management of the image catalog is easy (though I've been culling with xnview mp first) and I like how you can create your own workflow by favoriting the tools you use a lot and it will arrange them in the favorites tab by the order the processer applies them in
I think Panasonic is the same?
I'm not sure RAW is a standard format - everyone knows .CR2 because cannon, but my GX85 outputs .RW2
and I know Fuji does something different, and so on
Darktable has been able to handle RW2's fine, anyhow, and I imagine wouldn't have issues with any of the others. They also have the proper lens correction for the two I've been using so far.
BustrKc 14-Jan-19 09:24 AM
Yeah, I'll check out dark table
I forget what kept me off light table
Prude 14-Jan-19 09:25 AM
I think there was also recently a plugin for windows 10 to display various RAW files natively but it doesn't work for RW2s despite listing them, lol
Not that it matters, since xnview and darktable are able to display them without it and that's my whole workflow between importing to my PC and uploading (if I go that far)
Prude 14-Jan-19 11:51 AM
Man I've gotta give Fuji credit from what I've read about them
they seem like a really good company - tons of firmware updates for their cameras long into their lives, introducing significant new functionality and so on
polls on what lenses they should focus on refreshing or work towards next, etc.
seems like the manufacturer in this sector that understands its customers most
also they seem like the absolute best option for someone who doesn't like post processing, given the quality of their "film simulation" SOOC jpeg output
despite that, considering how much I've enjoyed m43 so far, I couldn't see some future rich me adopting their aps-c line as a second system, not enough of a difference in strengths and weaknesses from what I have - they are, however, likely to be the cheapest digital medium format producer as their gfx line evolves and maybe in some years it will be relatively affordable

I love it when them local scum messes up
it has to be a subgenre of photography
i went home, got my camera and returned for those shotsd
Prude 15-Jan-19 05:13 PM
what's your setup anyhow
i know what buster uses but i don't recall you saying
Prude 16-Jan-19 01:47 AM
just one of the handful of jpegs I got from that light store when playing with exposure bracketing and HDR shit (the latter of which I think is only done on-camera when shooting purely jpeg, otherwise has to be done in post - too difficult to get right live when handheld anyways) (edited)
still narrowing down which of the actual raw files I like most and will proceed to edit manually
but in general I think of all the shots, the ones that were a bit underexposed like this have a nicer vibe to them
allowing the scene to be as bright as it really was isn't as dramatic
I've noticed it in pictures before across everyone posting them - but Discord's embedded previews really look more noisy than the full size images (if click on to open in browser) actually are
saw it in the ones Der and Buster posted too - interesting that it's not just Discord compressing them upon upload; rather something fucky with how they display in Discord as embeds

The one time where shelling out for a weathersealed kit would be nice
Maybe if it stops tonight, I'll try to find some shots while everything is still wet
Peaches 17-Jan-19 10:29 PM
Definitely do that, with your camera it should look really nice
We have the same effect going on here, if I felt better going to town for shots would be pretty fun
Across the street from my backyard is a building and you can see it's really foggy. I was messing with my phone's camera
Lol you can make it creepy
@Prude
It just makes me want a nice digital camera when I play with these camera settings
I mean that's obviously completely blown out
Prude 17-Jan-19 10:46 PM
still atmospheric
lo-fi photography is a legitimate genre imo
Peaches 17-Jan-19 10:59 PM
True enough
I was surprised my phone was able to capture that at all because it's quite dark
Prude 17-Jan-19 11:00 PM
def pumped the ISO (which is why phones often suffer in low light) but a picture taken is better than one not regardless
and I think the grain actually works there
Peaches 17-Jan-19 11:33 PM
Yeah messed with the iso and apt
My phone can take raw photos as well but I haven't messed with them all to much
Prude 17-Jan-19 11:46 PM
does your phone have the new android night sight stuff?
only played with it a little but it seems pretty good at using multiple quick exposure to make a brighter composite (while using the layers of data to cancel out noise or something like that)
also apt - your phone has a variable aperture?
thought they were all fixed - on my pixel there's only adjustments for shutter and ISO if I use a manual app
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:01 AM
Oh I meant shutter speed, my brains all foggy. It doesn't have the night sight that I'm aware of
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:02 AM
do you use a particular app for manual control or just stock?
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:02 AM
That's stock yeah
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:02 AM
I've not been totally happy with any manual apps I've used and the Pixel's stock app is full auto basically
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:03 AM
Yeah you can switch between auto and manual
I use auto most of the time because it's just casual pictures but I do have an app for macro shots because I love macro photography
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:06 AM
that's pretty good
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:07 AM
The downside is that it's pretty difficult and there isn't a lot of control that you close with a phone
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:08 AM
I think it's good for what you're using, though
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:09 AM
Oh yeah it works well enough
Definitely helps to have good light for those shots though
All these are unedited as well
I have a lot of pictures of bugs and flowers bruh
Some of these are just auto snaps as well
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:15 AM
for the most part especially in good light i think phones are very good about auto settings
and with the amount of legwork the computational stuff can do, usually the results punch above their weight
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:16 AM
Really sad that one got messed up
Tbf it's hard to snap a photo like that anyway
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:17 AM
the real surprising thing is that no major camera manufacturer has tried to implement smartphone grade computational photography advances into a full size camera, because it seems like they'd be able to do crazy things with both a better sensor + manual controls AND advanced AI adjustments and automated shot stacking (in raw, not just basic HDR shit) and so on
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:17 AM
Yeah I'd say Samsung has a pretty good quality camera all things considered
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:18 AM
If I had to take bets, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony goes there first after their leading charge in mirrorless full frame tech advances slows down
they seem like the company most willing to take risk and make change
but at the same time, Oly + Panasonic have pioneered quite a few things themselves - the only thing I will always bet on is that Canon and Nikon will always play it safe and only use well established tech
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:19 AM
Yeah definitely. I wish I would have kept my 35mm camera tbh but I expected to move to digital and I've just not had the money for it
My old camera was a Nikon iirc
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:20 AM
If you do ever have the money floating around at some future point, I really do think the set of compromises m43 as a system makes is very good for hobbyist shooting
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:20 AM
Yeah when the times comes I'll definitely spend time shopping around
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:21 AM
like it's cheaper and more portable than the full frame stuff people won't stop hyping at present and I think they do a good job of making up for the smaller sensor with things like better stabilization so you can slow the shutter more and so on
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:21 AM
But yeah it's completely a hobby for me. I have some basic understanding of photos but it's been years since I've even studied it as a subject
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:21 AM
and also olympus makes a very well regarded 60mm f 2.8 macro
which could probably be found used under 300
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:21 AM
Ooo
I actually have a few small photos I took framed
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:22 AM
like any body will mostly do, I think a solid macro setup could be had under 500 between a used olympus/panasonic body and that lens - which I know isn't nothing in terms of price, but I think it's a very good reentry point if the money were to appear
the 60mm would also do double duty as a nice portrait lens as well
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:23 AM
That's true
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:23 AM
I mean likewise, most of the 42.5-45mm designated "portrait lenses" in the system also do macro very well in turn, despite not being marketed for it
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:24 AM
Yeah the lenses is something id need to read up on because I only ever had the one that came with my camera
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:24 AM
since they all tend to have a good minimum focus distance and enough reach (85-90mm in 35mm equivilent terms, since focal length is doubled in m43:FF equivalency)
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:24 AM
And I couldn't even tell you what it was tbh
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:25 AM
that's the other hidden benefit to m43: if you are doing portraits/macro/telephoto shit like wildlife, the already smaller lenses (because of the smaller sensor) also get a lot of extra reach from the crop factor
Of course it makes ultrawides a bit harder to manufacture since you have to go to very short focal lengths to get something like a 14mm equivalent, but whatever
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:26 AM
That seems like a good compromise because I would rarely take a shot like that
I definitely like to capture small details
I like things that tend to go unnoticed/overlooked
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:27 AM
and some people don't like that depth of field is also functionally doubles on m43 systems but getting nice bokeh is still possible on fast lenses esp. with longer focal lengths
and when you want the whole scene in focus, the extra depth of field is appreciated
I think I tend more towards street/landscape myself so that's great for me
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:27 AM
I do like some good city photography
I just don't have a good eye for it
Also not a lot of city tbf
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:28 AM
true
it would be easier to grow at it a lot faster if you lived in New York or Tokyo
that's partially why I've been watching that e6 guy I linked yesterday or w/e
he does a lot of arbitrary challenging of himself

Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:29 AM
I will say you'd like to take pictures in our downtown area
Some really fantastic areas
I've got a black and white shot of an old wall that doesn't even exist anymore
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:31 AM
yeah I think the subjects are out there no matter where one is
it's just a matter of figuring out that they're there
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:31 AM
Picture of a picture I know
I actually developed that photo myself!
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:31 AM
i really love the google photoscan app for digitizing images btw
it does a fantastic job for being doable for free on a phone
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:31 AM
I'll have to try that then
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:32 AM
it basically scans from four given anchor points which lets it digitally mesh the image to eliminate things like glare/reflections and so on
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:32 AM
But that photo isn't really good but I've always loved it
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:33 AM
It's not a bad shot though, and if it's your city it has some significance on a personal level
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:33 AM
I like the perspective
Its also one of my earliest "I'm out taking photos" photo
I took it up against the wall looking up
Also by my first apartment, so I guess you are right, it definitely has personal meaning
Also it's badly framed but it works for the moment
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:37 AM
The ONE Project. One technique, one subject, one location or...one approach of a different kind! It's a way of simplifying your photography, keeping you focu...
this was what came to mind
he makes a point of going out on a shoot using just a silly hipster square format app on his phone
but through good composition still gets some images that are subjectively quite pleasing even with the sort of cliche processing applied by the app
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:38 AM
Yeah I also like taking shots at strange angles
Making you look at something differently
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:38 AM
I appreciate that he does silly stuff like this because it helps to illustrate that the shooter is still the most important element to photography
Peaches 18-Jan-19 12:39 AM
Oh definitely all the technical stuff is nice but some pictures are just pleasing to look at
And hell that's all you can ask
Prude 18-Jan-19 12:58 AM
It's a big concern when looking into lenses because some may be objectively less sharp but have more pleasing overall rendering and so on
And different people will review the lens differently because of that
Also I forget this, but dirt cheap old manual lenses can be adapted to the m43 mount very easily w/ little adapter rings that usually don't cost much at all - if you like manual focusing it's even cheaper to use really nice old glass in that case
Short flange distance on the mount so basically adapters generally just have to create more space between the sensor and the lens

@Prude I tried the photoscan thing
Obviously not perfect but it does pretty good
This shot always upset me because the exposure got messed up
Peaches 19-Jan-19 03:19 PM
They definitely darken the photo, could probably get better with proper lighting and also digital editing
Prude 19-Jan-19 03:22 PM
yeah, I notice it kinda does have that effect
but otherwise for something you can do in like 2 seconds I like it
need to find time to use it to mass digitize all our old family photos
the job it does is good enough
and I'm more likely to do it that way than using an actual scanner
Peaches 19-Jan-19 03:24 PM
Yeah it was really easy and quick
I'm definitely going to hit up my grandparents photo album next time I'm over there
Prude 20-Jan-19 03:13 AM
the olympus rumors are saying the lenses oly goes for this year will be premium (read: the affordable but good ones) rather than pro (the ones that are huge and cost 4x as much because of the slightly wider max aperture and i guess weather sealing)
which is great news
apparently they consider their pro line basically complete at this point, as they had spent the last few years focusing on them, which means hopefully new iterations of the lenses I'd actually want
basically the same 17mm f/1.8 they already make but sharper would be perfect, since being relatively soft (or having high copy variance) is like the only consistent whine about it

I think I may try shooting RAW + Jpeg with the high contrast monochrome jpeg settings, since it renders the EVF/screen monochrome which I've seen praise for in that it removes the ultimately less important and distracting quality of color so you can focus on things like composition and contrast and easily differentiate blown highlights and so on (edited)
I also trust cameras to automatically produce pleasing monochrome images much more than color, which is a majority of the post-processing work I've done so far
so I'll have usable SOOC monochromes for things I like but not enough to process, and the RAWs retain all color info anyways and can then be done manually if I want to
Prude 23-Jan-19 07:26 PM
man Discord's in-app rendering is shit compared to fullsize on large images
bad luminance banding in the sky
Prude 23-Jan-19 08:05 PM
same image but raw processed rather than using the monochrome jpg
a more noisy experience than one would hope for, even though it was at ISO 200, because I had to expose for the sunset which made the foreground underexposed thus requiring me to bring up the shadows to recover detail which always creates some noise
and then the sky itself always being troublesome
but still, without pixel peeping it's fine - I do think difficult high contrast situations like there are where the monochrome is generally nice to have on hand (as I think contrast-y monochrome is the only monochrome look I give a shit about and noise isn't as big of a deal), but a sunset is the kind of thing where the color itself sort of is the subject (edited)
Food 23-Jan-19 08:18 PM
if you dont mind criticism, consider shooping or at least region quarantining certain parts of the picture. so for example your shadows you can desaturate so they dont get super vivid and noisy while you can play around with a wider spectrum on the sunset/horizon.
Prude 23-Jan-19 08:18 PM
It's a good idea, I'll have to figure out Darkroom masking
the net effect there I don't dislike - I intentionally lifted the blacks a bit and brought up saturation because I like the matte look, but I do think in that particular shot it inevitably brings in noise if you want that much shadow detail and the hint of green from the plants (edited)
Food 23-Jan-19 08:20 PM
you can start to see the gamma creep on the shadows
where its going from black to green
so if you separate the two you can keep the shadows as blacker instead of green and then mess with the horizon
Prude 23-Jan-19 08:20 PM
I guess what I was saying was that for the purpose of this exercise, I wanted to shadows to be lifted into green
but I would definitely do what you're saying if I was trying to produce something without aberrations of any kind
If I wanted to really do serious landscape work, I probably wouldn't handhold thus allowing exposure bracketing and merging in post (edited)
Food 23-Jan-19 08:23 PM
Here's a campus shot I was gonna mess with eventually
Prude 23-Jan-19 08:24 PM
a very watery campus
Food 23-Jan-19 08:24 PM
id taken a lighter one so i was gonna prob just splice the foreground and horizon
so lighter foreground and darker horizon or etc. to see which way looked better.
Prude 23-Jan-19 08:24 PM
that's essentially what exposure bracketing is
it's easier to make it usable with a tripod, which I don't own because I fancy if I can't do the exposure right handheld I won't do it at all!!!
I try to stay minimalist with all of this
Food 23-Jan-19 08:27 PM
🤷 whatever you enjoy
Prude 23-Jan-19 09:05 PM
I figured out how to mask, so I did a mask to keep the velvia slider from increasing foreground saturation while also taking a softer touch to lifting the shadows
I think it reduced the amount of noise and aberration in the foreground while retaining the matte look
Prude 24-Jan-19 01:10 AM
lol the big nig olympus camera was finally formally announced, seems super niche (sports, wildlife, shit like that where the size is an asset to balance the massive lenses) but i applaud their willingness to do something new for the m43 sphere and maybe some of the advances will trickle down to the more casual cameras in the next iterations
they also announced a 100-400mm lens with a built in 1.25x teleconverted that can also pair with a 2x teleconverter they're going to produce to create a potential 2000mm full frame equivalent setup, which will still be smaller than some of the like full frame lenses with less than a quarter of the reach
super niche, just like the camera it was announced with

neat, olympus is releasing their own more full featured (than their current image viewer shit) RAW processing program
I would imagine it'd be free at least for olympus users, and tbh if it's any good I'd probably consider trying it if I was shooting Olympus since I'd imagine they'd do the best job of handling the embedded data in their own RAWs and shit

Flickr is almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world. Show off your favorite photos and videos to the world, securely and privately show content to your friends and family, or blog the photos and videos you take with a cameraphone.
laughing at this post where whoever runs the World Economic Forum flickr page is typing like your typical confused retard boomer
Prude 27-Jan-19 07:39 PM
holy fuck this is cool, i didn't know there were any reflex lenses like this on the m43 mount
that's the lens i'd buy if I wanted to go wild w/ macro (decent light, since it's fixed aperture)
even pretty cheap, too
grey market via japan for under 200 😩
Prude 28-Jan-19 01:41 AM
it's real gay how flickr will utilize PNG-embedded EXIF info when you upload, but when downloading it is no longer embedded in the file
so then the choices are TIFF, which Flickr doesn't really support anyways (even if it will display, due to conversion to jpeg on-site), so then the resulting jpeg you download from that also lacks the EXIF
or jpeg, which is probably what most people do but since Flickr is limited by number of uploads rather than size, and because I think even at max quality jpeg output is just too lossy for me, and even if you convert ahead of time I think Flickr still does ANOTHER conversion there to bring the viewing filesize smaller (to save people bandwidth) so it's not like proactively going jpeg before upload saves you display quality over their in-house conversion
but it does retain EXIF when you download the original
but since all gets fucked by site-based conversion anyways, and since for jpeg and PNG they both retain originals which makes it useful for archival purposes to save hard drive space, I figure ultimately PNG wins out for max source quality and being able to re-obtain that uncompressed image even if I'd have to manually add EXIF data to it after retrieval should I ever need to
I suppose that's somewhat softened by my intending to keep the RAWs I use + their XMP (Darktable sidecar files) data on my PC, so I could always just re-export and those will have the embedded EXIF data, but I'm thinking in terms of a random hard drive failure or whatever
Eventually I'd probably just opt for redundancy if I got into it enough, seems like something good to have anyways, but that's an expense
Prude 28-Jan-19 02:55 AM
god yes
i love this shit
Prude 28-Jan-19 07:25 AM
found a solution to the flickr issue:
they have a way to download all account data in two files, one has all your images and another has all your profile info along with metadata in a .json
apparently exif tools could then write that back into the image files
makes me feel better about going all in on fullsize PNGs instead of gimping source file quality

let me guess, nobody has taught the locals to deal with substandard conditions and how snow behaves with rubber?
Taylor Swift 28-Jan-19 05:07 PM
Well
Heres the thing
Im almost 30
From the time I was born to I was 20
It snowed, twice
Since then it has snowed 5-7 times
We never had a reason to have the infrastructure or anything to deal with it
So the common tactic south of the Mason Dixon is just hole up for the day instead of fucking around with snow tires and salt dumps
Although at this rate we might have to start lmbo
As of tomorrow that will be 3 good snows in a year and a month
Peaches 28-Jan-19 05:11 PM
Yeah we've had flurries or whatever but actual snow on the ground for more than a couple hours is unusual
It's definitely more frequent
Taylor Swift 28-Jan-19 05:13 PM
We had a good snow in 93 IIRC
92-93
Then in 2009
Those were the only two solid snows
Then we had one in 2010, 2012, 2017, 2018
All heavy
2017 was the heaviest
Peaches 28-Jan-19 05:22 PM
We had a really heavy snow in 2009 yeah
I was a bit further north and we got like 6 inches of snow that stayed on the ground for several days
which again is trivial to most places but around here it shut shit down
New Dawn 28-Jan-19 05:52 PM
@Taylor Swift the main issue with snow is that you have about fifth of the regular traction you normally have
but this can be dealt with by being gentle with throttle, brakes and steering
otherwise, it's a fairly forgiving ground once you get used to it (edited)
now, black ice is a real bastard
instead of 5th of the regular traction, you have tenth of it
and it's usually spotty so grip becomes inconsistent
now, for prep the best you can do is to have a good heater in the car and don't do the tank commander when clearing snow from the vehicle
and maybe reduce the tire pressures a bit
if you get winter tires, get studded ones
they wear down the asphalt but give the best grip
Prude 29-Jan-19 01:01 AM
Got the new lens all set up
Glad I went silver on this one
It's close enough to match the strap hardware, the hot shoe, and the lens release button
But i think that's because this lens it metal rather than plastic - the silver on a lot of plastic lenses is horrible
The match is closer irl but lol lighting
Glad I went with that seller too - a little more pricy but the dude kept this shit in pretty much mint condition and the added expense could be recouped by selling the sealed fancy UV filter he threw in (like $20 on ebay)
(cause UV filters are complete bullshit anyhow)

Alright so I sorta reworked everything on my Flickr to some degree since I was going to have to reupload everything anyways to keep it consistent with how I'm managing stuff now, and then added more: https://www.flickr.com/photos/146471708@N08/with/47004258861/
Those are the two new ones that I've finally processed (posted a SOOC of a different shot of the light gallery before) which I like the most. I don't think the second will thumbnail in here because they're both full quality there and that one is especially large. (edited)

Peaches 13-Feb-19 12:50 AM
I really like the first one
I think it's the contrast
Prude 13-Feb-19 12:51 AM
yeah that's the one of the few things I've taken so far where I think monochrome suits it perfectly
I chose the one I took half an hour later for mono since the light was brighter and clearer so the contrast was better, but the sky was less interesting so there was nothing to preserve there
whereas the color one a half hour earlier was the inverse
Peaches 13-Feb-19 01:24 AM
Oh yeah the sky color is amazing
Prude 13-Feb-19 01:33 AM
something that I like about everything being in monochrome at the point where the image is taken (and not being able to see the color raw until I'm home and reviewing on desktop) is that it's almost like christmas
being able to sit down and finally see how everything looks in color
Prude 13-Feb-19 12:18 PM
man this new lens Olympus announced is interesting - it's not cheap, but an equivalent focal range of 24-400 in a barrel that isn't THAT huge is real handy (edited)
and if you didn't need a wide aperture for thicc bokeh or particularly low light, this could do almost everything else imaginable
goes wide enough for interiors, long enough for birding, minimum focusing distance is 10cm so combined w/ the zoom it'd be crazy for macro even I think
could cover a lot of use cases in a single lens for the right person, I appreciate that they develop stuff like this even if it's not something I want or need

man it sucks that costco only prints basically at 3:2 and 5:4 aspect ratios but i can't deny the value which I may as well utilize since we have a membership
it's like a dollar something for an 8x12 print and free shipping i think
Gonna test upload there and see if they will fill the space with white (preferred) rather than forcing a crop. If not, I'll do what I was doing anyways (as I was going to still have a 4:3 offwhite frame to replace having to manually put in mats even if I could print in 4:3) and just pre-edit them with frames that make them effectively 3:2.
but if they'll do it automatically, that wins for convenience

Prude 19-Mar-19 01:39 PM
Yeah I try to edit each image in a direction it seems suited for
The 45-150 in the first image has a bit of like film-ish softness so I went more saturated and velvia-like
The second had a ton of blown highlights because of the range between light sources and the shadows, so I felt B+W worked better for drama (edited)
And the last one just ended up real nice when I tried an understated orange and teal split toning scheme
But yeah, I was especially happy with the latter two as well

the insight to the process of doing that kind of photography is interesting but the amount of exposure bracketing and stacking + light manipulation and so on seems a bit dishonest in terms of marketing, which I know nobody actually trying to sell a house gives a shit about 100% honesty (edited)
but ~muh art~
like staging the scene itself is of course something the layman expects when looking at nice house images
but creating ambiance that is not possible in reality is a bit far I guess?
I mean I do like aggressive processing on normal shots (even if I think most people do stacking/HDR-ing very non-tastefully and I don't bother with that kind of processing myself cause lol who carries around a tripod or shoots shit when it's light enough to make the bracket work handheld smugpepe )
but maybe this is one of those cases where there's space for an ethical debate because it's not really for the sake of art alone
but rather a function of merchandising
Prude 29-Mar-19 09:02 AM
though i guess there is the dichotomy between architectural and real estate anyhow, w/ the dude actually specializing in the former which could explain his reputation for heavier editing

Good stuff, those lenses are way more versatile then I figured
Prude 06-Apr-19 07:52 PM
the 20mm in particular is fantastic
the telezoom is good enough - its effect on the extreme long end can range between retro charm and not particularly well resolved though
I think the 12-32 punches above its weight for something so small and cheap but I don't end up using it much anymore it since using the 20mm instead works fine in most cases
but I am considering using the 12-32 as my only lens when I go to Japan since it's good enough, versatile, and it minimizes risk (being that there's a lot of variables I'm stressing about since it's my first time travelling internationally)

But idk how often id even use it
Its not even expensive, like ~$600 for the body
I just don't have real uses, outside of my sweet reviews
Prude 11-Apr-19 01:39 PM
yeah the BMPCC gets some good reviews
there's also that 8k sharp thing they announced that will be using the m43 mount but that's a long ways off
also thanks flake, i tend to get real spergy about things when i start doing them!!!!

I don't like sharing my stuff
Even my shitposts
So I find it respectable and admirable that you're so open with it even if it is an online alias
Prude 11-Apr-19 02:30 PM
Well, I appreciate that, but I don't think too much about it I suppose
I do think videography can be a lot more personal than the kind of photography I've been trying
so I could see that being some cause for reluctance
Dr. Wheels 11-Apr-19 02:52 PM
Ion know I think i'm rarted
Peaches 11-Apr-19 04:11 PM
Yeah photography is pretty subjective anyway. There are a lot of technicalities but if people find a picture pleasing it works
Like I said I have some from I was into it that I like. Even if overall they aren't very impressive

Lightroom controlling with MIDI controllers
seems nifty, getting a midi controller with a bunch of slides and knobs is cheaper than buying a name brand loupedeck for having physical lightroom controls
I'm assuming it could be rigged to also work with other processing programs

Prude 18-May-19 11:28 PM
figured out a better process for noise reduction in lightroom, controls for color noise better while not mashing details in high ISO images, leaving just a pleasant and mild grain instead
i think what i was using was too strong in controlling luminance noise and not strong enough for color
ultimately shouldn't make a big difference but technicalities matter when I can zoom in enough to notice them (edited)

Doesn't have a name apparently, but it connects with Sushiya-dori.
for cities in particular, I see the value of telephoto focal lengths a lot more now
32 (64 equiv) was as tight as the lens I took goes but still a lot of the shots from the trip I ended up liking most were on the long end (edited)
whereas I've typically thought of myself as preferring wider FLs as a baseline, but I think especially in a city going wide just makes it sort of indistinct versus getting more details in along longer sightlines and such
BustrKc 01-Jun-19 01:20 PM
Was it that panasonic pancake kit lens?
Its like 9-32mm or some shit
Prude 01-Jun-19 01:26 PM
the 12-32 yeah
I took just it because I knew I wouldn't wanna lens swap while doing everything else, and it was light and relatively expendable if I lost it, since any really solid lens would be worth more than my camera body
but to be fair to it, I think it does a great job for a kit lens, and especially one so small
and the range is quite useful, would prefer the 12mm wide end at the expense of some reach (despite my praise up there for telephoto) versus the other pancake zooms in the system that go like 14-40 or w/e
because wide primes and stuff are less common and more expensive so it's basically the cheapest way to access 24mm equiv barring shoddy third party/vintage stuff
thereas I'd just get one of the 45/42.5mm primes for a few hundred if I wanted something like the other kit zooms' long ends (edited)
Though for now the 45-150 I have also covers that too, and I don't think the lengths between 32 and 45 are something you'd specifically need that often (edited)
BustrKc 01-Jun-19 01:46 PM
Yeah, that looks really sharp for a kit lens
I have mostly primes and they are not greater by any means
Id prefer the versatility of not changing lenses
Prude 01-Jun-19 01:49 PM
the IS on it helps a bit too, since its got a pretty slow aperture even at 12mm, so dual IS w/ a panasonic body helps make up a little for having to go slower on the shutter compared to my 20mm 1.7 for instance (though not enough to fully compensate)
shooting around town casually i prefer primes I think, for the better control over aperture and the better image quality and the creative constraint of having to envision things with a single focal length
but when shit's moving fast and there may be opportunities I can't reposition myself for in a country across the world, yeah the zoom made more sense
BustrKc 01-Jun-19 01:50 PM
I should really just stick to one prime length and get used to shooting from that distance
Prude 01-Jun-19 01:51 PM
You said you do video and stuff though? I think being able to actively zoom may be more of an asset there maybe, idk
but yeah for photo stuff with plenty of time to reposition and such, I like just putting one lens on and keeping it on for the whole outing
Hot on the heels of Panasonic's announcements from Cine Gear 2019, Chris and Jordan give us a hands-on preview of the new 10-25mm F1.7 lens, along with detai...
this shit panasonic has been working on seems great if one didn't mind the price and size
10-25mm would cover a lot of my typical use case, and the constant aperture is at par with most panasonic primes
declicked aperture ring too, for video
though something that bulky wouldn't work for me and I'm not spending 1.7k on any lens maybe ever, still cool that they've made one like that though
BustrKc 01-Jun-19 01:56 PM
Yeah, until i get a dedicated video setup, im just sticking to photo shit for now
Prude 01-Jun-19 01:58 PM
for the time being I'm happy with what I have too
If I were to buy anything next, it probably would be the panasonic 42.5 1.7 if I wanted to try getting into portraits and such
and then beyond that, the 15mm 1.7 is also dreamy but I think the 20mm is close enough that some foot zooming works alright in most cases
that 20mm is a great lens all around, aside from the AF being a bit shoddy, but that doesn't matter much for what I do
actually keep the camera in manual mode when it's on (since I need that to see focus peaking anyways) and then use back button AF to override that, but still have the option of immediately manually focusing if it hunts too much in low light or whatever
BustrKc 01-Jun-19 02:10 PM
Yeah, i have a few macro buttons that are pretty useful for that shit. And the Olympus I have has a m/a focus mode, where if i half depress the button i can then adjust focus after it auto focuses
Riso 05-Jun-19 11:00 AM
hey yo graphics nerds, how to put a text with an outline over an image without pirating photoshop
Prude 05-Jun-19 11:00 AM
It's easy to do in gimp 🤷
Riso 05-Jun-19 11:01 AM
🤢
Prude 05-Jun-19 11:01 AM
you basically put in the text layer, select from layer, grow the selection by x amount of pixels, fill, put that layer behind the initial text and now it's outlined
Riso 05-Jun-19 11:01 AM
that's way too much work for what should be a basic text feature
Prude 05-Jun-19 11:01 AM
maybe but it's how i've done it for bullshit memes and shit

Olympus PEN-F Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only)
as much as the Pen-F's pricing has always been atrocious when compared to the GX85 which I think is at least about on par in terms of features and images
this is the best deal I've ever seen on it new, and it is a sexy camera 😩
still, though Olympus claims the line is discontinued, I think the people want a second one and if they did I'd hope for a better positioned front dial that does something more useful than jpeg shooting profiles, and maybe a build in grip (I don't think of grips as a size penalty on mirrorless cameras because even the smallest lenses generally protrude further to the front)
if it wasn't obscenely expensive and was at least as good as an eventual GX10 or w/e, I'd consider it were I to upgrade within the m43 system
as by then I'd probably have the money and willingness to do so
BustrKc 15-Jun-19 11:44 AM
There are a few grips from this company jb camera designs that are real nice
But also another ~$80
Prude 15-Jun-19 03:46 PM
yeah, I just hate how extra grips then add to the height dimension
since that's actually significant to how I pack it away
whereas a native grip could just extend in the same direction of the lens, occupying no additional room in a bag
BustrKc 15-Jun-19 03:47 PM
And block the card access
Prude 15-Jun-19 03:47 PM
yeah, though I've seen ones with cutouts for the access
or at least the 3d printed schematic out there for the gx85/gx9 grip has that
