About how hes not really part of the ka-tet
And his fate is something else
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:22 PM
between that tracker and #bookz, I can find almost anything.
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 02:22 PM
Rolands story is the most tragic story in literature
At least top 10
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:23 PM
Infinite Jest is a piece of shit.
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:23 PM
he's p much cursed by god but god wants to give him a chance

Lost fingers and twos
Killed a kid
Killed his friends

like not the "you're eternally damned to hell" but "ima fuck with you for this lifetime and everyone that comes after, but you still have a chance to make it right"
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 02:24 PM
Is that what Flagg is
A god?
I knew he was something clavo
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:25 PM
flagg isnt a god
hes an immortal sorcerer with extra dimensional abilities but hes far from being godlike
doesnt stop him from trying
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 02:26 PM
Hes a real piece of shit is what he is
Im just past the Emerald Palace part
Where he shows up for the first time to them
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:26 PM
Favorite authors? Mine are Emerson, Goldman, Kropotkin, Thoreau, Sinclair, Bookchin, Camus, Le Guin
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:27 PM
i mostly read shitty fiction, ever since i shitcanned all my old books almost 10 years ago i havent read anywhere near as much as i should
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:28 PM
Le Guin is good sci-fi
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:28 PM
tolstoy, lovecraft, niven, tolkein, poul anderson
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:29 PM
how could I forget lovecraft
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:29 PM
idk i totally blanked on half the shit i used to read
lovecraft is a goddamned hack but hes influential
and no one writes like him
like he was getting paid by the letter and it shows lmao
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 02:29 PM
Tolkien, Lovecraft, King, Bukowski, Martin, Asimov
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:29 PM
He gets most of his points for his unique way of writing.
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:29 PM
yeah asimov is good
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 02:29 PM
And Faulkner of course
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:30 PM
i love kings pre-1995 work
when he sobered up it got kinda meh
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:30 PM
Fucking Asimov is great. I miss my kindle, I had the entire foundation series.
Read the first two books I think.
That guy wrote so many books. He must have never gone outside.
Deleted User 30-May-16 02:31 PM
Niven's Ringworld/Known Space is probably my fav scifi
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:31 PM

atilla threatens to have him and his son impaled, demands even more gold for the insult and the head of the man behind the plot
good shit
"if it wasnt for the unassailable right of diplomatic immunity i would have you killed" or something along those lines, he was one of the only steppe kings to actually honor "dont fuck with envoys"

I should be reading my cognitive linguistics textbook anyway.
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 02:53 PM
Id really like to order these hardcovers of the Dark Tower graphic novels
THey arent TOO expensive but
Anyone have experience buying used books from amazon
Chipaya 30-May-16 02:55 PM
all the time
never had a bad experience. Maybe check reviews on who you're buying from. If you care about having a nice book you will probably want to buy new, but if you don't care about some general wear it's fine.
I've never recieved anything unreadable.
Generally, if the new price isn't much different (like used $40 and new $50) I will go for new
but if it's like new $20, used $2, go for used
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 03:01 PM
Yeah I found some of these
Like .65
From Goodwills
They get good reviews so
Even if its not good Im only out 65 cents
Ah the only problem is the shipping charges are stacking
God lmbo
11.52 for the books
15.96 for shipping
Fuck it, just ordered two
10bucks
2 for the books 8 for shipping
w/e
Chipaya 30-May-16 03:21 PM
Yeah
Too bad you can't use Prime on that shipping.
If you go through the same vendor that shipping cost can go down
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 03:24 PM
Unforunatly none of the same vendors were selling the same stuff
Wow how fucking bitchmade
Its STILL two different shipping charges
From the same vendor
Peaches 30-May-16 05:08 PM
Asimov!
David brin is pretty good
Iain Banks owns
Prude 30-May-16 09:50 PM
Best novel written by an actual goon
I got like 1/3rd into House of Leaves like two years ago but haven't really read much print since, I need to finish that and also probably read more stuff on a not-electronic medium
Taylor Swift 30-May-16 09:54 PM

Great book
Peaches 30-May-16 10:50 PM
sure is
like I said if you guys like that you should like The Zona I linked you earlier
it's not as complex story wise but it's got a similiar tone
Chipaya 30-May-16 11:05 PM
House of Leaves is good
It's not that long though.

Taylor Swift 01-Jun-16 10:51 PM
So Ive been doing some wiki reading on The Dark Tower
Not too concerned about spoilers since the book is more about the journey
Anyways I read Stephen King inserts himself into the book?
wtf lmbo
Peaches 01-Jun-16 10:55 PM
Better than a whole Mary Sue character I guess
Deleted User 02-Jun-16 07:53 AM
yeah they have to save him caus eof prophecy or some bullass
its like okay FINE stephen, do whatever its your damn dumb book anyway
Taylor Swift 02-Jun-16 01:53 PM
For a 1.30 + 3.99 shipping book
Its in vgood condition
Peaches 02-Jun-16 07:52 PM
Oh shit
I will say that first book its pretty noticeable that beginning section was originally a short story that he expanded on considerably
Also I almost forgot the pup. Poor dog
Oh damn that even did Terminus with no point on the end
Chipaya 02-Jun-16 08:46 PM
Anyone ever actually finish Infinite Jest?
Chipaya 04-Jun-16 09:03 PM
Suggested reading for after finals?
Peaches 13-Jun-16 12:13 PM
Already posted my suggestion
But tell me genre and I'll see what I can come up with
Chipaya 13-Jun-16 12:18 PM
I decided to finally complete Infinite Jest
and the probably move on to Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid
Hori 15-Jun-16 08:15 PM
too lazy to read this dumb channel
since goons cant read
has anyone here read the stormlight archive
Taylor Swift 15-Jun-16 08:17 PM
Nope
Lancek 15-Jun-16 08:48 PM
My Official recommendation for any sf readers is the Mars trilogy. Hard sf enough to be plausible but still an interestingly posited what-if for the near future of humanity.
Peaches 15-Jun-16 09:20 PM
I have those
red mars, green mars, etc?
Hazlen 15-Jun-16 09:25 PM
Yep, there's also a fourth book called The Martians
but it's not related to the trilogy plot except for setting and time
Peaches 20-Jun-16 11:17 PM
I should get some good audio books to listen to at work so I don't eat through all my podcasts
No clue what to get though. Finding a good book is one thing but finding a good audio book version of a good book maybe tricker

Chipaya 21-Jun-16 02:59 AM
It helps to actually just go off of narrators
I REALLY like Jeremy Irons or other british accented men
I can't for some reason stand to listen to women narration aside from some rare audiobooks
Libravox has some amazing narrators, but you really have to search through some shit
Chipaya 28-Jun-16 03:53 PM

Transdimensional Brain Chip is fuckin great
its the most absurd shit
Ulf gets a brain chip that allows him to talk to other versions of himself in parallel universes. every week it allows for double the connections, so its exponential growth/universe splits
Deleted User 09-Dec-17 08:25 PM
one of the ulfs became a fanatical christian cultist
and yes the art is supposed to be really shitty

Peaches 15-Dec-17 06:54 AM

Coathanger MD 15-Dec-17 06:58 AM
No Neil Stephenson
Peaches 15-Dec-17 07:42 AM
I want to say I've read it but maybe not. I'll look into it
Coathanger MD 15-Dec-17 01:43 PM
It's really good cyberpunk
Starts slow but picks up speed fast
Much flashier than Gibson and deals more in the absurdity of a corporate future where the Italian mafia run the pizza delivery company Inn the US and more insanity
Stan Halen 15-Dec-17 02:17 PM
Yall should read some Burroughs

Peaches 16-Dec-17 09:30 PM
It's not that bad but I get what you mean
I know its off topic but I just try to let me daughter make choices for herself as much as I can. Within reason of course
Giving her a chance to practice making choices and thinking for herself early I think will help
Cubear 16-Dec-17 09:32 PM
absolutely. my parents had a policy when i was growing up. they didnt care if i wanted cigs or booze or whatever, so if i wanted them all i had to do was ask my parents for them
made all that stuff way less special and mostly just expensive. there was no rebellion in drinking or smoking so it wasn't fun lmao
Peaches 16-Dec-17 10:26 PM
yeah my mom something like that where she was like oh yeah you think it's a lot of fun I will let you get shitfaced here if you want
yeah I did that and had the worst fucking hangover
lesson learned, moderation iskey

cio has plot armor so she's not gonna die but man what a clusterfuck this raid has been
1 human sacrifice, 1 devil tossed into a pit of mimics, one devil thrown into an invisible trap, the rest of the team blown the fuck up, cio crushed by fallen rocks, and the heroine has parceled her humanity way deep down where it can't get in the way of her subconscious desire for Royalty
Prude 21-Dec-17 10:12 AM
It's been a while since I read the books so I'm not sure if my theory matches up with them. I've based the theory (mostly) on the films, and...

Peaches 30-Jan-18 07:03 PM
He's losing it
Deleted User 01-Feb-18 12:10 AM
i know its a day late
but its a real downer. you hear of the Grand Dragon, Scaled God of the Deep, Lord of Yre-Ynamon and Master of the Infinite Vault and its a senile old man who doesn't even really remember why he's counting everything.
when the gold coins are as deep and ubiquitous as dirt
Prude 01-Feb-18 12:12 AM
heh, guess that would be the eventual fate of the eternal jew smugpepe
Deleted User 01-Feb-18 12:13 AM
when ten thousand lifetimes have been spent counting by hand, losing count and STARTING OVER jfc why?!?!
im getting the sinking feeling mammon isnt in charge anymore
the fluff text on KSBD has a thonking parable about building an invinicible Tower
but within the tower you simply starve at the peak of your invincibility
whats a Dragon with an infinite hoard supposed to even DO with all of it?
cant spend it, cant count it, shit, he's too damn old to even remember where it even comes from...and due to his* machinations theres more pouring in constantly
*100% sure his emmisary/high priest is calling all the shots and mammon exists now for the sake of existing
killed his whole family, betrayed everyone who may have cared about him, for an infinite heap of gold he can never spend and doesn't even NEED since he has a literal Word Of God embedded in his forehead
Deleted User 03-Feb-18 10:13 PM
smith
called it
cant die, cant really live, no one really cares about you, your mind and memories are slipping away
at least he has his manners
Peaches 03-Feb-18 10:18 PM
Yeah that's rough
Deleted User 03-Feb-18 10:19 PM
I'm curious now why Cio said she couldnt remember what happened
Peaches 03-Feb-18 10:19 PM
Dozens of swords just stuck in him for no telling how long
Deleted User 03-Feb-18 10:19 PM
that she "stole" a key from a real monster
dont even think he feels em
Peaches 03-Feb-18 10:22 PM
Me either
But they are still there
Can't be good for anyone even an immortal
Deleted User 03-Feb-18 10:23 PM
yeah cio never actually said mammon was a monster, just "worse" than a monster
a pitiable wretch counts as a worse fate methinks
Peaches 03-Feb-18 10:23 PM
Yeah I would agree
Deleted User 03-Feb-18 10:23 PM
i think a lot of her "how i stole the key" story is gonna wind up being a fib
her memory is fine, she remembers all of it, or enough to be ashamed. she did something really shitty and low
i mean, worse than runnign a slaving guild and killing 15 slaves a day
like thats to be expected, she did something thats just shamefully awful
her body language too when she's recalling it looks like she's trying to hide from it
Peaches 03-Feb-18 10:26 PM
Yeah you can see something is going on
Im not up with the story so I don't want to spoil it
But I have been trying to read it when I can because it's so good
Deleted User 03-Feb-18 10:27 PM
like "stealing from an old blind helpless senile dragon and getting innocent people killed in the process"
like, mammon's a demiurge and killed his whole family eons ago but he's not like mottom or the other demiurges lusting for war and delighting in the misery of others
he doesnt use unspeakable means to retain immortality
and he's polite
Peaches 03-Feb-18 10:29 PM
Super polite for an immortal dragon on a bed of gold
Deleted User 03-Feb-18 10:29 PM
probably not a bad sort, considering the setting?
he laments killing his clan, so he's not a sociopath. he was just greedy as a youngster and lacked foresight
Hazlen 03-Feb-18 10:31 PM
why do they stick around and help if they tried to kill him
Peaches 03-Feb-18 10:36 PM

what about these?
Ozmiander 05-Feb-18 07:55 PM
i'm hoping you've all read The Black Company
Peaches 05-Feb-18 07:55 PM
I think I have read about 5 of those
Hazlen 05-Feb-18 07:55 PM
habitat colonies made from cored asteroids where inside is a massive social experiment and people live there effectively lobotomized down to the brain function of cattle stare
monofiliment whips that can dismember you with the lightest stroke
Peaches 05-Feb-18 07:56 PM
yeah I remember one was basically everyone stayed plugged in at all times and basically had their body on life support
refused to live in reality at all
I have not read the black company
Hazlen 05-Feb-18 07:56 PM
Did you read the one about the dude on a moon with a massive citadel on massive train tracks orbiting the moon all so he could stare constantly at the planet
Peaches 05-Feb-18 07:56 PM
I do have them to read though
Hazlen 05-Feb-18 07:56 PM
waiting for something to happen
Peaches 05-Feb-18 07:56 PM
oh shit no I haven't read that one
the culture series is funny as well
the first one I read was the player of games
I can def suggest that one
Hazlen 05-Feb-18 07:58 PM
I havn't read culture books yet
Peaches 05-Feb-18 07:58 PM
yeah they basically solved all the problems so now eveyone just exists to do whatever they want
the main guy is all about games of all types, he has mastered them all
and they con him into going to play this new game no one ever heard of
turns out its a bit more than a game and whoever wins rules the entire empire
and they are not happy this alien guy shows up and starts winning
Ozmiander 05-Feb-18 07:59 PM
The Black Company is basically the story of a hundreds of year old merc unit in a super low fantasy world over a few decades with the current group
Peaches 05-Feb-18 07:59 PM
also it breaks down a bit of the aliens society which was pretty cool
yeah I have heard a lot of good things about that series
Ozmiander 05-Feb-18 08:00 PM
and is basically grunts in the trenches taking on magical beings
Peaches 05-Feb-18 08:00 PM
I mean lots of good things
it's just everytime I have started reading it I have had something come up or I get side tracked
I do have them to read, they are in my list of shit I want to read
Ozmiander 05-Feb-18 08:01 PM
it's one of thsoe series that you can watch the writer really come in to his own throughout
they stary as charmingly amateurish

Riri Williams (Ironheart) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Yeah I'm not a big super hero or whatever movie guy. But Deadpool is pretty much all humor
Scuba Steve 18-Feb-18 10:04 PM

Another good one that's more serious is Planetary
It's 26ish issues I think
Scuba Steve 18-Feb-18 10:07 PM
sometimes because they replace 10-15 trades with a volume release
Peaches 18-Feb-18 10:07 PM

Scuba Steve 18-Feb-18 10:07 PM

Alt 18-Feb-18 10:17 PM
The other one thought, actually made me a cry a lot since I've had mental issues a long time, thought ending it once a long time ago. That panel is what I credit in regards to keeping me going because I happen to see it at the time on a random /v/ thread.
That wherever you are and whomever you're with is pretty damn important to the people around you.
And you cant blame yourself for all the bad shit that happens, even if you where a man that could press coal into a diamond, you cant save everyone or help everyone.
But enough about me, back to the sadness, got a few more here, this is a 5 part one.
Written by a dying cancer patient, the writers kid I believe.
Peaches 18-Feb-18 10:22 PM
Yeah that's right in the feels
Whew
Scuba Steve 18-Feb-18 10:22 PM

If you have to read ONE superman comic book, make it all star superman.
This shit DEFINES Superman.
His human side.
It is one of the best comic books ever written.
Find it, steal it, whatever you need to do. But read it.
I have a big soft spot for superman as a result of that panel up there. Always amazes me how some people can write a literal god like him so well.
And yea, visiting kids in superhero outfits, never not worth it. Gotta be good at holding it in though. Its a feel overload the likes of which can crush you.

KSBD is just stare all the time and phone reading doesnt do it justice, hi-res bigscreen is where its at
from awkward sexytime session to demonic wall busting and beheading in 6 pages
and it gets wackier fro mthere

is anyone interested in the new avengers team being put out in comics?
they're bringing back the core group of Iron Man, Captain America and Thor(Odinson has a new hammer) I think they're bringing in She-Hulk, Ghost Rider, Black Panther, Dr.Strange and Captain Marvel
Ghost Rider seems really really out of place, She-Hulk is a necessary because you always need a hulk and Bruce is off doing his weird shit after being resurrected
Black Panther, Strange and Captain Marvel are 100% movie which really sucks

Well what else can you do? Gotta keep printing these series
Barry Allen at least had the decency to stay dead for 20 years.
The way I see it, death in comics just has to be handled differently than most other fiction. DC does this really well because all of its weird shit simply gets added into the lore. Marvel resets and restarts endlessly, but DC basically has everything be canon to some extent.
Grant Morrison basically makes his career off that. He fucking references the Batman of Zur-En-Arr in a modernish storyline. And Batmite for heaven's sake.
Hazlen 08-May-18 09:57 PM
I don't know shit about capeshit i was just talking about the concept generally
DeadScholar 08-May-18 09:58 PM
Comics gotta be treated by their own rules. Can't really compare them to any other form of fiction besides actual classical mythology.

The dissolution of the self beyond death is nothing to fear.
Persistence beyond your physical body would be an existence both unimagiable and in all likeliehood not very fun
Death is merely a return to the source.

Deleted User 16-May-18 10:09 AM
you know he has a personal stash of all his characters boning down going back years
DeadScholar 16-May-18 10:30 AM
I bet he does. Though actually, I bet he doesn't, I feel like his comic is strictly a means for him to either score virtue points and keep money rolling so he can make shitty music and live off his massive patreon money
I respect Jeph for being self taught and chronicling his artistic progress, but he's basically rewritten all of his characters from scratch twice over. Dora used to be a sassy goth who suffered from jealousy issues and now she's just A Lesbian whose only role is to be A Lesbian (who owns A Business).
Faye is the ONLY character who has basically been a consistent focus of development, and even she has sort of been dialed back and pushed forward again. Like, her alcoholism largely comes out of nowhere -- it's never a problem until it is.
Everyone else is basically just there to have A Problem that is then solved via Deus Ex Machina, the most egregious being Bubbles and Faye having their Evil Robot Boss defeated by Mystery Person

in KSBD lore, the demiurges lend out their power to "emmisaries" so they effectively split their abilities
mammon (grandpa dragon) only had one
and she's dead as shit
i get the feeling he gave a LOT of his power to her, but its no match for a proper demiurge
so now a senile dragon who's had millennia of his work absolutely btfo
gives grandpa the car keys
but yeah mammon has all his power back and he's REAL pissy

I wouldn't say they are amazing but they are quick entertaining reads
I am going to read some of them again since it's been a while
Also if any of you guys like ebooks okay and want ebooks let me know
I like a real book but ebooks are ahem inexpensive and take up no space physically and very little data space
OrkleDorkle 31-Jul-18 10:43 AM
ebooks are good shit
I got a Kobo Aura One last year
great purchase
I finished reading this recently, highly recommended
I started reading The Noble Koran a year ago, which is a straight up translation
and 1) the chapters are arranged longest-to-shortest rather than chronologically
2) it makes tons of off-hand references in very flowery language that make no sense without context
so this dude remixes a biography of Mohammed, the Quran, and Hadith into a coherent, roughly chronological whole
Like, if you just read the The Koran, there's tons of shit where it will say something about
The Kafirs say "______________________". You tell them "________________"
And it turns out these are direct quotes of people shit-talking Muhammed. Half of the time we know exactly the guy who said them
Someone shit talks Muhammed, he goes home, comes up with some more verses From Allah Himself to shit-talk the guy back
Peaches 31-Jul-18 11:03 AM

b&n at first has no competitive price with amazon and no in store pick up
today it now has free in store pick up, marked down to like 20 bucks on the brand new hard cover
and online code TAKE15RMN takes off 15 percent
$18.94 for the hard cover and it'll be ready to pick up at barnes and noble within an hour of store opening
can't believe they are really cool and not shit as usual

ywn be a multiversal emperor with his own recreational Battle Island
also solomon david has some GREAT taste in architecture and uniforms, like god damn
dwarf champion 02-Sep-18 01:23 AM
thats not a book
also didnt get far into the fall of gondolin yet but i can give some tips
if you read the prologue and preface he spoils 3/4 of the story
but if you don't, you'll be confused
so the 1 thing to remember is the noldor elves, which i think are high elves as the game poorly calls them now
are called fucking gnomes 100 times in the book
because christopher wanted to honor his father and only correct a small amount of the changes that became official canon
and i like the book so far but everytime i see the word gnomes i gotta go 'fuck' and remember that stupid word means elves
Taylor Swift 02-Sep-18 01:27 AM
I didnt know that
dwarf champion 02-Sep-18 05:23 AM
yeah christopher goes into it, tolkien started the fall of gondolin in the hospital after the battle of somme i think it was
so 1916
and planned to finish it once he finished the hobbit, trilogy, and silmarillion
but he never even actually finished the silmarillion
so christopher updates any words that his father specifically told him or wrote down that he changed
then leaves in gnomes for elves lol
Prude 04-Sep-18 05:51 AM
so now that i've read the last handfull of KSBD pages
my prediction is 100% that Allison will bumble into drawing Solomon-David's blood in the upcoming tournament arc

It's not bad per say but it's a different direction than the book
BustrKc 05-Nov-18 12:13 AM
Yeah, the show is not something I'd say I liked
Quornes 05-Nov-18 12:13 AM
Especially how they chickened out about the Saint of Killers
BustrKc 05-Nov-18 12:13 AM
It had the names of a comic I liked, and almost some of those themes
Coathanger MD 05-Nov-18 08:17 AM
The boys was alright
It took the badasses in trenchcoats trope a bit far and how comically stupid and evil some of the so called super heroes were
But overall its a fun read akin to a popcorn movie
The last bit of the series does get a bit heavy but its an overal progression
Capri Sun Tzu 05-Nov-18 08:39 AM
Preacher season 1 was great, but was a big departure from the comic. tone was a lot more comedic I think (edited)
Season 2 got lame real fast so I stopped watching
Season 1 was great though, fantastic absurdist black comedy
Riso 05-Nov-18 08:42 AM
american gods season 2 is going to be really gay
BustrKc 05-Nov-18 09:22 AM
I didn't even know they made an American Gods show. I'll probably be steering clear of that one too (edited)
Riso 05-Nov-18 09:28 AM
the good news, it isn't on HBO
BustrKc 05-Nov-18 10:54 AM
Was the first season ok?
I really just want a scene for scene live action version of books most times
I liked the book, would read it again, but a show or movie is just easier for my adhd faggot brain (edited)

they blew up the zombie wife story to a ridiculous degree
Quornes 06-Nov-18 10:00 PM
American gods was a really good book though

A valuable lesson: Never feel pressured to supress sexuality in your artwork. Draw men masculine and women feminine. Articulate the features that you find the most attractive. Just look at the difference:

Are there any nerd folks that do book breakdowns and shit
It's really fun to do stuff like that because it can be easy to miss stuff on a single read through
And even more so as time passes by since you last read it
Capri Sun Tzu 14-Dec-18 01:36 PM
you know what author I really appreciate
Brandon "the machine" Sanderson
his technical level is pretty middling, like his craft as a writer
but he has neat ideas
and he writes like 3 books a year
just churning out those page daddies
and sometimes you just want a big ol fantasy book to get lost in and also to go read on the wiki and debate with nerds on forums about, and I cant name a better writer for that
Deleted User 14-Dec-18 02:06 PM

because yeah he's kind of a shit writer
Capri Sun Tzu 14-Dec-18 02:06 PM

Peaches 16-Dec-18 01:26 PM
I liked Joe Abercrombie actually
He is by no means a master but his characters are pretty good imo
I've only ever read the one trilogy by him though so I don't know if he has been able to keep it up. I believe those books were some of his first books
Capri Sun Tzu 17-Dec-18 08:29 AM
I dig Abercrombie too, it's got a Fargo-meets-fantasy vibe
I read a few more of his stuff, it's all decent but his orig trilogy is his best work
Also good: Scott Lynch
Peaches 19-Dec-18 12:57 PM
Yeah I liked that he didn't bother making good characters.
If anything his world building was weak and a slow but his character development definitely carried the books
Another favorite author that recently got some game because movie is Jeff Vandermeer
I really liked City of Saints and Madmen which is a collection of short stories all set in this one world. Really builds that up. Finch is also a good book. It's basically a dectective novel if we were overrun by living fungi
It's crazy and a bit creepy at times
Capri Sun Tzu 20-Dec-18 08:59 AM
sounds like my shit
and yeah I love how you slowly realize that all of Abercrombie's characters are horrible people
Peaches 20-Dec-18 03:18 PM
Yeah some are worse but none are good. And even in some of the bad ones they still have good motives on occasion. Like I said it's pretty much what made the books for me
Another series that's pretty good for light fantasy reading is the Vlad Taltos series
Steven Brust is the author
I think I read 8 or 9 of them. They aren't complicated really but they are fun
It does "this world is a bit of a mystery" pretty good. Especially since the main character is one of the few humans in a world of magical beings that live for long ass times and shit
Just real cool setting. Main character is actually an assassin basically

Is Trump's Military Strategy Based on Anti-Immigration Fantasy Novel 'Camp of the Saints'? ... While Trump's plan to militarize the U.S.-Mexico border is not unprecedented, it has sparked comparisons to Jean Raspail's anti-immigration dystopian fiction novel Camp of the Saints, which has widely been denounced as a "racist fantasy." ... The novel, which has been condemned by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a "favorite racist fantasy of the anti-immigrant movement," saw a return to the best-seller list in 2011 and has come into public awareness once again after it was cited during a Fox News interview on Monday.

Quornes 30-Dec-18 05:09 AM
Hmm so its like
Wild West era, but Rome never fell and is colonizing the not-USA. technology is equivalent to that time, but instead of gunpowder or coal engines. its demons. Cowboys wield Hellfire pistols that fire bullets propelled by barely contained imps
Story starts off following two guys, a cowboy and a half dwarf hired as scouts for a steamboat powered by a demon going up what I think is the mississippi river carrying a Roman Senator and his family, plus romam legionnaires
also elves are fucking terrifying immortal not native americans that are like bogeymen and highly sadistic

Anthony James Gregor (born April 2, 1929) is a Professor of Political Science Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley who is well known for his research on fascism, Marxism, and national security.
He has argued that Marxist movements of the 20th century discarded Marx and Engels and instead adopted theoretical categories and political methods much like those of Mussolini.[4] In The Faces of Janus (2000) Gregor asserts that the original "Fascists were almost all Marxists—serious theorists who had long been identified with Italy's intelligentsia of the Left."[5] In Young Mussolini (1979), Gregor describes Fascism as "a variant of classical Marxism."
Prude 19-Jan-19 11:58 AM
Berk prof so probably not too likely to be in favor of fascism
Riso 19-Jan-19 11:58 AM
According to Gregor, many revolutionary movements have assumed features of paradigmatic Fascism, however none are its duplicate. He has said that post-Maoist China displays many of its traits. He has denied that paradigmatic Fascism can be responsibly identified as a form of right-wing extremism.
Prude 19-Jan-19 11:59 AM
sounds like his take could be interesting
sounds like a very smart guy
Riso 19-Jan-19 11:59 AM
Andrew Muldoon in Canadian Journal of History says, "Over a long and distinguished career A. James Gregor has advanced some controversial interpretations of political ideologies. In particular, he holds that the Italian Fascist regime is best understood as a "developmental dictatorship," distinct from Nazism in key ways; a thesis that has proven surprisingly influential since 1945."

You know
of all books that are sort of "standard high school reading," I think I dislike Lord of the Flies the most
I thought its themes were sort of on the nose even then, like academia transparently selected that book for teenaged readers because teachers could play at some kind of "deep read" literary analysis bullshit with their students without demanding much actual delving at all
and I think the real hook of the book are just the bits of brutality, which feels like a cheap trick and not even particularly strong as such by that point in my life
Capri Sun Tzu 25-Jan-19 09:54 AM
it's a bit on the nose yes
I think other works expound on the innate savagery of man more artfully
e.g. Heart of Darkness, Blood Meridian
LotF is just "Look, people become brutal very quickly in the absence of order" while those other two go into some depth on the form that chaos takes and the deeper, almost religious-like implications of violence
the "standard high school reading" book I really don't like is Ender's Game
the plot bends wayyy over to create these contrived situations where Ender is justified in murdering people, and like what is the point exactly?
Hori 25-Jan-19 10:00 AM
Enders game wasn't a book I ever read in highschool
Idk if I'd call it standard

The sand of the desert of Yondo is not as the sand of other deserts; for Yondo lies nearest of all to the world's rim; and strange winds, blowing from a pit no astronomer may hope to fathom, have sown its ruinous fields with the gray dust of corroding planets, the black ashes of extinguished suns. The dark, orblike mountains which rise from its wrinkled and pitted plain are not all its own, for some are fallen asteroids half-buried in that abysmal sand. Things have crept in from nether space, whose incursion is forbid by the gods of all proper and well-ordered lands; but there are no such gods in Yondo, where live the hoary genii of stars abolished and decrepit demons left homeless by the destruction of antiquated hells.
that's how you start a story

😭
Capri Sun Tzu 01-Feb-19 08:30 PM
well sell me on it
I'm an easy mark
Peaches 01-Feb-19 08:32 PM
Uh hmm best way to describe it
It's sci-fi and fantasy rolled up into one. Super far future where some tech still exists but no one remember how it's works anymore. They have a huge old spaceship used as a citidal. Main character was an orphan raised in a guild of torturers. He ends up falling for a lady and gets in trouble and gets kicked out. Book follows his journey as he stumbles through becoming a Messiah like figure that is supposed to cause the sun to be reborn. The sun is getting really weak and everyone is moving towards the equator for warmth
Unreliable narrator that tells the story in past tense so he isn't always clear with you because of assumed knowledge
Also there is a ritual where they take the essence from a gland from an alien that eats people and aborses their memories and uses that and the voices of their victims to lure out others, they take the gland and drink the essence and eat people to absorb memories
Capri Sun Tzu 01-Feb-19 08:37 PM
sounds pretty good
reminds me of Jack Vance's dying earth setting
Peaches 01-Feb-19 08:37 PM
The main character has done this more than once but you won't know that for a fact for a bit
So sometimes other people in his head take over the narrative without ever saying so
There is also just layers and layers of stuff that you won't catch till you reread it
I've read it like 4 times but last time was several years ago
There is also magic at work
It's a bizarre world and I loved them
The moon is green from vegetation, and there are animals and plants from space Trav that have become native
There is a building that is a huge series of bio domes that each have a time and place frozen within them. People get lost and become part of that habitat
This is just small details
Also don't trust a single fucker
Almost every character shows back up again
I don't want to tell to much but it definitely does a good job of keeping things unclear at times
Capri Sun Tzu 01-Feb-19 08:44 PM

First book is shadow of the torturer
It's 4 books but they usually comes in two volumes
Shadow and the claw for the first book
I don't remember the title of the second book off the top of my head
Gene Wolfe is the author
I also liked evil guest and a couple other books
Peaches 01-Feb-19 09:03 PM
There is a duel with a deadly flower, sea giants so large they can't live outside the water or they would collaspe
A literal lake of the dead
Also iirc he doesn't make up any words. Some of the words he use are really outdated terms
The reasoning being the book is translated to language now, because the language then is considerably different. So he uses the closest approximate
All should be pretty clear from context clues but I know it puts some people off

“KI RATA An internal/external discipline, widely respected as the most dangerous Fist Art in the multiverse. It’s core technique is a breathing method that allows internal force to be cultivated extremely rapidly and focused on a point smaller than a pin-prick, giving blows absolutely phenomenal power. Blows using this technique are named by the number of points they contain – one point blows are strong enough to crack stone with a touch. Two point blows can decapitate a man with the air pressure created by flicking a finger. Legends about of old masters of Ki Rata using ten point blows to level cities but I find the claim highly dubious. I have found nobody willing to train me in this art and none who will grant me observation. Improper use of a Ki Rata technique will literally tear a man’s own body into pieces, so I have not attempted to study it myself. The only living masters live in the (remarkably pretty) land of Rayuba and are staunch pacifists, having, according to legend, culled their order to a single community. Reportedly the only time they ever use their considerable talents is to kill someone who somehow manages to learn a Ki Rata technique without being trained by them first. They only take apprentices to replace an old master when he dies, so that someone will always be around to make sure Ki Rata does not exist in the wider world. Many supplicants flock to Rayuba in the hopes of being trained by the masters, who sometimes are forced into self defense when they are challenged to unwanted duels. When I arrived there hoping for some insight, I witnessed such a duel between a low-ranking monk of the style and a well-known master of Pilgrim fist. Within three moves, the monk, a rather short fellow, use a two finger one-point technique to completely vaporize the bones in both the master’s arms. I am strongly dissuaded to continue pressing my study of this art and will write no further on it.” -MANUAL OF HANDS AND FEET

Peaches 26-Mar-19 10:32 AM
WoT isn't very good imo either
Hori 26-Mar-19 10:33 AM
i thought it was good but it is extremely long and there are some parts that are serious slogs
Peaches 26-Mar-19 10:36 AM
Also her statement was basically they give lots of shelf space to the classics but they could stock a larger variety of less known authors so they get more eyes on them
I would probably have loved them if I would have started them sooner but I tried reading them when I was 25 or so and I just couldn't get into them at all
I think it just felt sort of bland not necessarily bad so I lost interest
But pretty much any series with that many books is going to have slow sections for sure
Hori 26-Mar-19 10:39 AM
i dont agree with her complaints at all however
sure theres a lot of space given to tolkien works
but those are popular and will sell
and the wheel of time section could be MUCH larger
Peaches 26-Mar-19 10:41 AM
I mean I get it but I get what she is saying. But it's just about useless for me to go to the book store because they never have what I want but I could buy 10 copies of fifty shades of grey
It's more a problem of what the bookstores see as profitable
Hori 26-Mar-19 10:41 AM
the book store she posted pictures of doesnt even have a full set of hard copies for the WoT series
so its already a shitty store

"He knew that at heart, he was a rapist. And that meant he hated rapists more than any "normal" human being. They purely pissed him off. He'd spent his entire sexually adult life fighting the urge to not use his inconsiderable strength to possess and take instead of woo and cajole. He'd fought his demons to a standstill again and again when it would have been so easy to give in. He'd had one truly screwed up bitch get completely naked, with him naked and erect between her legs, and she still couldn't say "yes." And he'd just said: "that's okay" and walked away with an amazing case of blue balls. When men gave in to that dark side, it made him even more angry then listening to leftist bitches scream about "western civilization" and how it was so fucked up."

`‘Deep is the abyss that is spanned by Durin’s Bridge, and none has measured it,’ said Gimli. ‘Yet it has a bottom, beyond light and knowledge,’ said Gandalf. ‘Thither I came at last, to the uttermost foundations of stone. He was with me still. His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake. ‘We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. They were not made by Durin’s folk, Gimli son of Glóin. Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day. In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazad-dûm: too well he knew them all. Ever up now we went, until we came to the Endless Stair.’`

Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:17 AM
rarely is the writing quality good enough for it to be worth my time
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:17 AM
some series rely upon character moments though

Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:17 AM
blah blah banal "character" development or plot exposition
bruh 1
like dude you could skip the scene and not miss anything, why waste SECONDS of time
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:18 AM
because if a series is so poor that I have to routinely skip scenes to not feel like I'm wasting time
why the fuck am I watching it anyways
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:18 AM
because good stuff is rare
last series where I didnt skip anything: Chernobyl
thats how you do a good script
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:19 AM
especially a webcomic where it takes like 30 seconds to read the page and the pages are at best released like twice weekly
but beyond that, I would contest that especially in the realm of anime, there's a higher proportion of worthwhile things than ever before
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:20 AM
anime is real bad about dragging things out
Last anime where I didnt skip scenes: Iron Blooded Orpahs
Orphans
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:21 AM
good, that was one that def needs to be watched through
but anyways still, even though most media is trash, I simply refuse to consume trash media unless it has such personal appeal that I can stand to consume it wholly
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:21 AM
I skip vast sections of books too
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:22 AM
I also hold that listening to full albums is the best way to consume music
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:22 AM
For older stuff definitely
those old rockers did motifs and shit that made more sense on the whole. not sure how much that applies to modern music
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:23 AM
I've encountered a number of concept albums and albums that may not have a singular concept but nonetheless are paced and apparently designed as a whole work from recent artists
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:23 AM
seems like you're REAL light on examples Prude
dont be afraid to put yourself out there
which animes, which shows, which albums
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:25 AM
For instance, Joanna Newsom's Divers carries a through line that ruminates upon ideas like eternal return and how time and love might intermesh
and I think taken as an album it is a sublime experience
perhaps my favorite
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:26 AM
damn now we're talking
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:26 AM
Some songs were clearly made to reference each other
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:26 AM
I might have to check that out
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:26 AM
the final line of the album leads off to the opening of the first song
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:27 AM
you know, you're right. this is still a thing even in modern music
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:27 AM
Also, Clipping made a straight concept album that is sort of space opera meets slave story in Splendor & Misery
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:27 AM
e.g. Alt-J's nara album
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:27 AM
haven't heard that one but I'd believe it
It's not recent and it's a bit overdone probably but I still love the way the melody from the first part of Two Headed Boy creeps back in at the end of the second part at the end of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
also several Mars Volta albums have some sort of unifying theme, like the story of Cerpin Taxt's dying dreams in De-Loused, or the search for the protagonist's mother in Frances The Mute
depending on how recent we'd consider something "modern"
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:33 AM
I'd consider anything this decade contemporary
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:34 AM
Well anyways that Joanna Newsom album is definitely my favorite released this decade, though I absolutely expect it to not be to everyone's taste
Daughters' "You Won't Get What You Want" was released last year and isn't super tightly bound together, but I feel it has some common themes too (edited)
the Clipping album I mentioned was this decade too
hell even Bowie's Blackstar was sort of implicitly shaped as a send off to his life
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:37 AM
a lot of old progressive rock was big on recurring musical motifs
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:37 AM
ah, Kendrick's "To Pimp A Butterfly" is a good example of one that was considered particularly successful and popular
Ah, Closure In Moscow's "Pink Lemonade" has a straight up story throughout like many old concept albums
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:41 AM
you might like something like WIFE idk you're into some weird shit
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:43 AM
Anyways, while this isn't #musicmans I think it's sufficient to say that what I often consider to be pleasing art serves to draw me in and makes me want to consume it wholly, to derive every last bit of value it can offer, and pretty much forces me as the observer to engage in a kind of hermeneutic circle per Heidegger (edited)
yeah I like that stuff you linked, lol
I'm pretty non-picky with regards to genres, I consider it a virtue to try and find something to like about new things if at all possible
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:45 AM
well, the weird thing about trying to like something is that it usually works
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:46 AM
It's what bothers me a lot of my friends who are seemingly unable to "get" works that might be considered "challenging" - a lot of them don't WANT to give it time to sink in and hook them
I know time is at a premium for many people and it may seem snobby to say, but I think the most strongly felt art is that which I have to labor a little to grasp
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:47 AM
Well, time will be at a premium for you too sooner or later
Its valid that many people choose not to invest and gravitate towards things that are more or less instantly accessible to them, but you personally are better off for going it about it the way you are
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:48 AM
Still, there are those who would just as happily go for the simple gratification of the easily digested given any amount of time
Which that's their deal, it ultimately doesn't matter too much to me
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 08:48 AM
They may be wiser for it, idk
Prude 06-Jun-19 08:48 AM
I think as people we just enjoy sharing experiences that we know have much to offer
I mean the contrary thing to note is how frustrating it can be to always be looking for more and unable to be happy with a lot of the popular culture at face value the way others seem capable of indulging in it
I think a lot of people relate to art they can easily empathize with or that they feel reflect their ideal state - that is, maybe a lot of people highly value simple positivity which is why the most broad appeal is held by pop music and hollywood films and so on that represent a straight forward good time
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 10:21 AM
whoa I didnt know Joanna Newsom was Andy Samberg's wife
Prude 06-Jun-19 10:22 AM
yeah it's sort of a weird pairing when considering their respective work, lol
and also that he doesn't deserve her 💢😡
Capri Sun Tzu 06-Jun-19 10:25 AM

I was just defending my stance that it's cool and good to skip boring plot exposition or banal character moments and in fact, you save a lot of time while doing so

Roadside Picnic (Russian: Пикник на обочине, Piknik na obochine, IPA: [pʲɪkˈnʲik nɐ ɐˈbotɕɪnʲe]) is a science fiction novel by Soviet-Russian authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, written in 1971 and published in 1972. The 1979 film Stalker, directed b...
thinkin this might be my next read
the premise is that aliens visit earth, hang out for a while, and then leave without interacting or acknowledging humans in any way in the same way we would ignore any wild animals we encountered on a brief picnic in the countryside
and the "trash" they left behind is all super advanced artifacts to humans
Jackuu2 19-Jun-19 09:05 PM
